Hi everybody,

I am looking at possibly making a rifle with a 46" barrel. My question is where do you purchase a cleaning or range rod for this length of barrel? I have had no luck finding a rod to accomidate this length of barrel. The longest rod I have found was 44" total length. It would be nice if I could find a rod that was 48" long for a little extra length for ease of loading and cleaning.

Your comments are greatly appreciated...thank you!

Not sure where to find one as of yet, but I will look...

If one cannot be found, perhaps a screw on extention can be made from either another ramrod or an old ball starter... :hmm:

Just thread it on to get the desired length you require...

Ya an extention would work but it would be nice if it were a one peice rod.

:hmm:

I am sure there are others on the forum that shoot smooth bores with very long barrels.
Actually the muzzleloader I am looking at is the Jim Chambers Smooth rifle with the 46" barrel.

Ive purchased brown fiber glas rods from dixie before, they are 48 inch, made some nice range rods with pool balls for handles, put on both production made ends and 30-06 shell bases that were tapped for the fittings. made several for pistols as well. use a bore guide if you have any doubts.
2 bucks each, 2 at a time.

FYI,

Brett

October Country will make them any length you want...both solid and tubular brass, stainless, etc...just tell them the diameter and finished length you want and what size threads in the ends...then check your front porch in about a week...I have several, all excellent

I might be absent minded on the length....
You can also get white fiber glass rods, 3/8th. at your local farm store, they are sold as electric wire fence posts, I've used them as well, best to seal them with a gel coat or clear poly spray. have seen these in 48 to 72 inch lengths, usually anot 2 bucks each.

Good idea thank you...I know exactly what you are talking about. We have some of those at the local AG supply.

I've bought a couple 48" nylon range rods from the Gun Works. Haven't been able to break 'em yet. They've got several different diameters available as well. Hope the link works.

I made a couple at a friend's house. He had a lathe; I bought some stainless stee round stock and we bored a hole in one end and then tapped it. I threaded the other end and ran it into a hole drilled in a maple ball. On ones that I made since, I epoxied the rod into a hole bored in a billiard ball to act as a handle. This can be any desired length -- just cut off less rod when you make it.

(BTW -- Thanks Jerry Willis! The rod is still working well after all these years.)

Track of the Wolf sells hickory blanks (fitted with a single brass or steel tip) that are 48" long. I use one full-length with added grooves I cut in the opposite end for a better grip as my home-based cleaning rod.

Might better verify the size you want is in that length. Mine were 3/8" round.

Check out Virtually Indestructible Ramrods, they make rods up to 48 inches in length, there is a banner ad from them rotating at the top of the forum with the other banners...
