not sure if this is the place to post this or if there is even a place for it here but last weekend I was finally able to attend a shoot with the Jefferson LongRifles to do a meet and greet kind of thing and hope to join their group. My question to those of you who who belong to a historical group or have belonged to one is how did it compare to going it solo? I have little gear yet but they have told me they will work with me on that issue except during events that are open to the public at which point I would have to either have my $^** together or attend as a visitor. the guys I met were great fellas and hopefully I will make the cut but never have been part of anything like this I am not sure what to expect.

thanks.

I dont know these boys but will lay money that if you show an intrest and will try to get on board they will bend over backwards to help you along. I still have gifts from when I started this almost 40 years ago,and in that time have gifted a lot of newbees. All you generaly have to do is try and keep improving yourself.Be warned its adictive.

Belonging to a group compared to not? That's a vague question with many varying answers.
Join a group and be as active as you can be. Quit when it stops being fun.

I think you are right TG,I have put off attending a shoot with these guys because of my lack of gear but one of the first peices of advise I received was not to buy anything else until I attended some more events because chances are that someone there will have what I need at a fraction of cost or maybe free. the VP told me he had multiple of everything from changing personas or just finding things he liked better and that most of the other members are in the same boat.
They have invited me to their squirrel camp this weekend and I am going to try to go but I also have a scout camp with my grandboys so if my daughter doesnt take my place at scout camp I will only be able to attend squirrel camp thursday night and friday til mid day. I didnt take my rifle last weekend because it still isnt sighted in but I will take it thursday and try to finish that up.

Thanks fellas.

I belong to several BP Clubs. One does reenacting, holds an Annual Rendezvous, has Woods-Walks. The other two just shoot paper. I like all three and have even become the Chief Range Safety Officer of the Reenacting Club.

From what you've typed, I can tell that they have PLENTY of stuff for you to get involved with, and will offer everything from advice to "loaner" period-correct items to help you get started. Our Reenacting Club is the same way. Show some sincere interest, buy some small items to get you started and things will be loaned to you so you can see what works for you BEFORE you buy anything!

I have a 1835-ish Mountain Man persona, so a cheap pair of painter's pants with the hammer loops & Dickies label cut off of them works just fine with a real $75 hunting shirt I bought. The Club President gifted me one of his Capotes, so I'd have a coat to wear at the colder events and the Rondy Campfire celebration. He enjoys seeing me wearing it and he's proud I'm using it. This group you're going to join is the same way, so let them get a good look at ya, BE SAFE, and just enjoy the experience. You'll be really glad you did!

Thanks Dave. they sound like exactly what you describe in that they have woods walks, camps and vouz. they told me to bring my modern camp this weekend and you caint get much more accomodating than that. if my daughters husband would kick in and do what he should as a father it would be a lead pipe cinch but being scout daddy is eating my calender up, but i digress, that is a whole nother kettle of fish.

thanks again.

Glad to hear they've accepted you! You're bound to have a blast with such a friendly group!

We have a Facebook page you might be interested in: Garden State Black Powder Association. You can "like" us and keep tabs on what we're doing. This Sunday is our dreaded "Nipple Cup", a 4' high trophy adorned with baby bottle nipples that nobody wants to win, lol! So check us out and ask for me and I'll reply.

Lots of good ideas, links, listings of clothes makers, rifles for sale, etc. So check us out & enjoy the hobby!

 Sounds good & enjoy yourself! Volunteering for an Appleseed event or participating in one will grow bonds with the club members as you share good times!

Have the rest of a blessed holiday weekend!
