I find that 70 grains of powder under a .490 diameter ball patched with some lubed .018 pillow ticking works very well in most of my .50 caliber rifles. These have both Green Mountain and Colerain barrels on them.

I use this load for target shooting.

That said, this load might not work well at all in your barrel.

Muzzleloading rifles seem to have their own minds about what they like and what they dislike and each one of them is different.
 
I use 70gr of 3f on my .50 and 75 in my .54 target and hunting. As said all rifles are different try with your rifle.
 
Same here. I quit the usual law of everything over .45 cal needs 2fg. Been using 3fg in all my .50's with great results and i swear it burns cleaner. Also, to me, it seems to take the flash from the pan quicker than 2fg. I use 4fg in the pan. I swear by White Lightening Touch hole liners. Been at it seriously since 1970. Lock timing is also very important in powder granulation selection......tune dat flintlock!
