I'd like to know where that guy got his info, bout the only thing he said that was halfway true was not to use the black powder subs in it.

It sounds like he's never had a flintlock. Some salesmen talk a good talk, but it's all talk.

Hey Mike, its not the choice of rifles that caused the problem. It was the choice of Hats.
Last Nov. at the Bear River Meat Shoot it rained all day. It was one of those cold wet gray days in the high country. The rain is cold and slow and soaks every thing. Needles to say there were all kinds of gun problems and wet cold hands.
When they read off the winners it was a real treat. For the first time in 25 years the first 3 winners were flint locks. As my old Jack Garner .54 fired even with a wet frizzen, we were among the winners. We proved a lot of things that day to those of little faith.

this site is well equipped to explain a great deal of cool stuff about flintlocks. more subject- matter knowledge than any other place i've seen.

you should follow your instincts, get a good flintlock, and your journey to the darkside will complete, young rockbanger... no, really, once you try the flint, you'l be disappointed with everything else.

there's just something magic about it.

Guess the next thing that I'm going to get is some books on the subject of building one. Probably the kentucky rifle as I have always like the long rifles and the looks that it has. Any suggestions on books on building to get???
Then I will start getting parts as I can. I am for sure going to get a chambers lock. I just have to figure out the cal. and length of barrel. I will probably build the stock my self as I have a bunch of walnut and cherry laying around. Thanks for all the info and keep it coming. Mark

be carefull....be very carefull... once you own a rocklock. That's all you will want to shoot.
I love shooting mine and the only ones I shoot are the ones I built.
They are the result of 400 years of tinkering,re-builing,testing and then perfecting.
If they didn't work in bad weather, then I guess Washington's attack across the delaware is just a myth.
Give me a break.
You need to use Black powder of course, but it cleans up just as easy as pyodex.
If you live in the Northern NH AREA give me a e-mail and you can shoot one of mine.

As I was talking with the shop owner I mentioned that I would like to get my hands on a flintlock to see how it felt and also maybe shoot it. He also said that shooting a flintlock can be troublesome?? said on damp wet days or windy days ya ain't going to shoot it.

Poppy freakin cock!

Here on the left coast high above the Californicators. It rains and is nasty most of the year.

Come visit in February, when we have the Rain-De-Vue. 75% are flinters, and they all fire all the time.

Me and mine will put up our rock sparkers, any time, any place against cap guns.

More than likely he just wanted to sell you an "imitation rifle"...you know those "in-lines"? :rotf: . I bought a flinter kit CVA Big Bore Mountain 54 cal back in the 70's and I love it. I built my own PA longrifle flinter. I have 3 flint pistols. I have not had any trouble with them. A fellow had a TC caplock at the Flea Market this Sat for $200. I passed because I prefer a Flint.

I've got a 50cal cap rifle in T/C just wish it were a flinter. But I have sentimental value attached to it. My parents gave it to me when I graduated highschool other wise I probably would trade it for a flinter.
Been looking at the track of the wolf site and don't know how I missed this bit it looks like it mite be the way to go.

Price isn't to bad and I still get to do a little on the stock. Just have to save my pennys though.
Now I'm just trying to figure out if I should get a 36 cal. or go with a 45 cal. I've got a 45 c&p revolver and it would save on getting another mold but..... I just don't want to get a bigger one burn more powder.
What has been you all's experience on cal.

A .45 cal rifle will not shoot the same size balls as your C&B revolver. The revolver takes a .451=.457 and the rifle will take a .440 or .445. You could just by a replacement flintlock barrel and lock for your TC.

I've thought about that. if I looking at it on track of the wolf right it would be only about another 100 bucks or so and I could have the kit. less there is somewhere else cheaper.

Several years ago, I was deer hunting and a freezing rain began falling. By the time I got back to the truck, my fowler was covered in a coat of ice. I scraped the frizzen face as clean as I could with my thumbnail and did the same with the flint. The gun lit off first time with no delay and killed an old pine stump dead. I don't see how you could get much more reliable than that. 'Course, it was a Chambers lock.

Abandon all hope, ye who enter here...For this is the land of flintlocks and there is no going back. Good news is....you'll never WANT to go back.

Yes it will probably take a little tinkering and a little tuning of your methods and sometimes your gun to find out just what works best. But there is nothing quite like it when you get it figured out and there are plenty of folks here to help you.

And as some of the others mentioned...just say no to subs. They all have a higher flashpoint than real blackpowder and do not ignite reliably in a flintlock. Real blackpowder is sometimes harder to find, but it is also cheaper than the subs.
