I have a Charles Daly side lock. It appears someone changed out the #11 nipple with some other type of ignition. Took it to a gun shop and they never seen it before. It came with caps but it definitely is not set up for them. Anyone know what it is?

It is what is known as a 'mag-spark'. you unscrew the top & use a pistol primer for a cap, for every shot.

I had one on a rifle once upon a time. They’re a royal pain. I threw it away and installed a #11 nipple.

I think it takes a 209 shotgun primer, like everyone else in the 70s I had one. It is a one shot deal and then you have to spend some time prying the 209 out with your knife, they don't come out easily or at least mine didn't. I trashed it in short order.
