I recently posted about my smoothbore .50. I finally got the #6 bismuth shot to pattern well out to about 20 yards for turkey with about 1 oz shot over 40 grains of powder. Aiming for the top of a turkey's head centers the pattern nicely. With a patched ball, when rested off shooting sticks (standing), I was keeping a pretty good group at 30 and 40 yards with about 90 grains of homemade powder (more like 70 gr commercial) -- minute of turkey, I'd say. Just for fun, I backed up to 100 yards, put the sight at the top of the target & eased the trigger back. Somehow, the ball managed to find it's way to a spot that was only about 4" from the bullseye. I wasn't even expecting to hit paper. Granted, a true shotgun would be better for shot. And a true rifle is better for PRB. But that little .50 smoothbore isn't too bad at doing both. If I only had to have one, I'd keep that smoothbore & sell the rifle. Or sell them both and get another, nicer smoothbore. So, yes, get one.
