I have a CVA Tennessee Rifle that I'm going to re-stock..as noted before, I hate those 2 piece stocks. I'm going to buy a stock from Pecotonica. I've never inletted a lock before, but I bought a piece of maple, and I've inletted my lock about 6 times now. Each try is getting better.

The barrel is 33.5" long, .875" across.

I'm leaning towards the Southern Mountain, and using Iron furniture.

My question is this. Is a 33" barrel too short for this style rifle? I'd think someone in that era would use any barrel they could get, right?

I probably won't ever be judged/juried anything like that, I just don't want to stupid looking gun.

Thanks,

WindLaker

i got one of those two piece stock kits from a yard sale (35$, quite a steal), and like you, i hate those two piece stocks! my remedy was two get some fairly high grade wood (bocote, in this case), and permanently joined the two pieces together. i also did some customizing, making it a half stock in the process. some day i may go ahead and make a new stock for it, or not!(with thw existing hardware and some epoxy, minus that brass plate, it's actually a pretty solid connection!)

Those CVA rifles are good little shooters, but I think everyone hates those two piece stocks. Restocking it would be an education. Afterwards, you'll have a good looking fun gun  .

33 inches would be short in a Southern Mountain rifle. If ya want to make a rifle that looks a little weird by it's short comings, go for it. But please don't use the excuse that if they had it they woulda. That's like saying they would have worn Levi's if they had denim in the 1776 conflict we had with England. Actually if more people would spend the time on a little research, they would find that even most of the kits today fall short (pun intended) as most existing originals are much longer than 42" the most common length offered. the 42" barrel seems to balance a tad better, and the longer the barrel the more $$$ it costs to make. Most were 46" or longer up to 72" or more. Just call it a Southern Mountain Carbine. :)
P.S. By way of note L.C. Rice is going to start making 46" B, and C weight barrels in 50, and 54 cal. when he has 50 orders collected.

My Miss Maggie has a 48" barrel in 37 cal.

my first kit was a CVA two piece stock, wrapped it with leather----bet a lot of you guys and gals could do it--- :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: don't have it anymore---traded it off---

I could imagine reasons why a longrifle barrel would have been shortened to 33". It should be a handy length rifle and if it makes you happy than go for it.

You might also consider a pattern such as the Lemen for that barrel, reconsider using the supplied lock though at that point.

WindLaker, I have one of those that I can't even remember where I got it but it was cheap. I started to "redo" to give to my stepson to shoot. So far I have added a toeplate and pinned the barrel to the stock. I took out the brass shim and glued the joint but I will need to reglue it since it has come loose. I started to narrow the forearm but that is as far as I got. I quit because I think I made the forearm side too slim. I brought it down to 1/16" and now it looks slab-sided. I will try to shorten it some if I can to make it look right. I have not tried to round the forearm into the barrel yet so that should help it look better also. TOF "refarbed" one of these a couple of years ago and posted pictures of it, it turned out about as good as you're going to get one. It is what inspired me to try to work on mine as I thought it would be a good practice piece. I printed out the pictures at the time to keep as reference. I plan on wrapping the joint with some rawhide to simulate a "broken stock" repair. I have just been in a hiatus(sp) due to new house, new wife, etc... Life happened! I am planning on cleaning out the workshop and starting up again soon. I also have a boy's trade gun that I started... and a southern for me! Kurt

I have a CVA with that a same stock. I ordered a Kentuckey half stock that I'm getting started on. But I had to have some sinus and throat surgery Thursday so I'm still not up to starting on it. This is a great shooter.
