I spent the afternoon shooting my CVA St. Louis Hawkin style gun that I built and my Lyman GPR - purchased assembled.
Pyrodex worked fine in the GPR, but there was a noticable delay with the CVA. Both guns worked great with 2F BP or a 10gr BP base and then a Pyrodex load. Would a better nipple help the CVA?

You might get better ignition with a Hot Shot or similar nipple. Also CCI #11 magnum caps should help if you aren't already using them.

What he said. I'd also add possibly trying a musket nipple in hotshot. I've have very good ignitions with musket caps.

my little brother went with musket caps...it made him happy....for a bit...#11 are cheaper and way more available.....

it would most likely work better just using black powder,i also shoot a c.v.a st louis hawken and only use black powder and it works fine.

Thanks for the replies!
I think I'll go ahead and buy a Spitfire nipple for the CVA. The local stores don't seem to stock magum pimers, only regular #11s. I will also use BP or at least a BP starter charge with the Pyrodex in either the CVA or GPR.
