Back when I first became interested in ML, in the 1950s chunk matches, all rifles were caplocks. When I first bought a ML rifle, it was a caplock, in about 1971 or so. Flintlocks weren't widely available, at least in my experience. But then I wasn't looking for flintlocks.
IMO, flintlock rifles were re-introduced relatively recently in my area. This is pre-inline monstrosities. In the 1970s, I don't remember a FL rifle or a supplier of flints, although there must have been some. You just didn't see them.
