Damascus patch knife

I found this great hand forged neck knife with a 3.3 inch blade. It doubles as a fire starter, throws a great spark. And it fits perfectly in the neck knife sheath from The Leatherman.

Nice looking. Not documented much earlier that the 1970's.

Personally, I'd never own/use one. A knife blade and a striker are tempered to a different hardness, and I have no desire to have a sharp end attached to my fire striker. Not to mention that if dropped, there is a very good chance your striker will shatter and you'll be left with a blade and no handle...

Actually it was made about a month ago by a smith in Hungary and it's based on archaeological findings. You have to go back way further than the 1970's :haha:

The handle is forge welded to the blade, they're different materials.

Material: Tang: C10, Blade: 2 x 40 layers of twisted C45+90MnCrV8

The first I recall seeing one it was in a golden age arms co catalogue, this was in the late '70s. They said in it a new take on a sticker at that time.
It's not a bad idea but more bush craft. No one would be kicked out of camp over one I'm thinking, but I don't think I would want to use one. I could just see my self with some rag tinder, flint and fluff nest in one hand, stricker in the other, one quick strike and woof... knife in my hand :haha:
Not much of Damascus in America during the age of strikers, but even in the east would that expensive of a steal be used on a striker? :idunno:
It do look good it's a toy to be proud of....don't stick it in your hand.

The whole striker thing is just an aside that I happened to notice. As you all know, any piece of hardened carbon steel will throw a spark. The handle just fits the hand rather like a striker and if you strike toward the sharp side of the blade, well, lay off the moonshine and enjoy your prize! :haha:

I don't know about h/c or not but it's a neat gadget! Great bush craft! If made correctly it would be a great little hunting knife!

A nice piece of blacksmithing art.

My brother gave me a folding knife with a "damascus" blade about 35 years ago for Christmas. He said he wanted me to use it a bunch and see how well it stood up to resharpening and everyday use. It is still in my sock drawer, unused. Some things are just too pretty to use.

You posted good pics.
Looking at it again I can see the transition between the two metals. But I can't see the weld. Very good smithing by the maker.
