Been buying black powder (one or two pounds at a time) when I stop at Graf's store in Mexico, Missouri as was my father's habit 50-60 years ago. Two months - three purchases, Each time I was asked and provided my Driver's license which the clerk did "something" with. Didn't really pay attention nor ask any questions - just glad to find some.

So ...do you reckon we're being tracked/entered into a government data pool or is this just for their records? Don't recall filling out anything. When ordering by mail/internet is there any requirement to provide identification? Never did that, so I don't know. Curious not paranoid.

No the sellers do not report individual sales to the BATF or other agencies. If they want an ID it will be because it's store or company policy.

I do know of one case where a seller reported a suspicious order to the BATF and they later told the seller the individual had ordered a quantity of short lengths of pipe threaded on each end and 2 end caps for each piece from a nearby hardware store. The BATF wouldn't tell him more.

Fed regs limit private stashes to 50 pounds on premises. Beyond that one would need a special permit I assume. Perhaps it’s tracked by address for that reason.

Yes. They are illegally gathering info from all firearms related sales and making a database. It's much easier now with all the AI technology. A lot of cash sales get past the data collection miners but every purchase transmitted with an electronic footprint is analyzed automatically and sent to the appropriate files if it trips the alert. The technology they have in place now is unbelievable. Most people have no idea how advanced the technology is. You're most likely already on one of their watchlists. How else will they be able to systematically disarm us when the time comes? Hold on a minute, my tinfoil hat is starting to vibrate...Seriously, yes they are making a database.

When the clerk asks for your ID, he's keeping a log for the State may audit the sales, or the ATF, to ensure the seller is in compliance. When YOU buy without cash, i.e. some sort of "plastic" that data could be accessed, and it's safer to operate (imho) under the assumption that it is being used.

i would say "they" know all they need to about me and I am on multiple lists.
and i agree, having seen and used some of the amazing technology that we are data mined continuously.
i refuse to lose sleep over it.

Dave I am not so sure , yes there is a data base, example the shop I purchase from for both the muzzleloaders and un-mentionables prior to even getting to payment wether cash or debit card (I do not have or would use a credit card) first thing they want is a drivers license they will scan the code on the back of the license, Yes I believe they are looking for flags but I also believe it is for a record of purchases related to firearms. And I am not refrencing weapon purchases this happens for cleaning supplies it does not mater what is purchased. Then goes the payment issue as I always use cash the point being it is allready in the base so it really would not matter the method of payment. Is this a requirement of the business perhaps but I do not think so reason being I dealt with this establishment for years and this is a program that has just started with in the last 2-3 years or so. When I questioned the business on this issue I was told it is kept as a permenant information system on all purchases from each buyer. So leads me to believe there is a national registery of all things related to weapons of all types, Are there businesses that does not do this I am sure there is for now but would wager not for much longer.

The fellow at Thunderbird asked for my ID. I don’t believe that Powder Valley required an ID for an online sale, but I may have forgotten.

Decades ago, some blasting supplies had very small coded chips in them that could be traced to point of sale. Don't know if that's still done nor exactly what they went into. Irrelevant to this discussion about sporting black powder but might be for black blasting powder.

Graf's used to sell dynamite & blasting supplies many years ago, so I know they go strictly by the rules. Next time I'm there, I'll ask about the driver's license thing. A guy can't have too much black powder - well, maybe that's true.
