Online you tube I watch a video were the gentleman says to use salt free veg oil for barrel
I figure you all would be the best to ask.
Is this a good idea

I think that kind of oil gets pretty gummy after a while. I spilled some in my camping cooking utensil box once, and they next time I went to use it, all the silverware was glued together from the oil.

It could work in a pinch, but vegatable oil has a thicker viscosity than real gun oil, so it won't flow as well. If you left it in over an extended period of time, you might be swabbing it out with paint thinner or turpentine, due to it drying.

Gun oil is cheap and does the job. :idunno: Bill

I wouldn't use it in the bore, but to rub down the outside it'd probably be OK. Kinda like when you season cast iron cook ware.

Salt free vegie oil will reduce the chamber pressure just as it reduces blood pressure. Same principal.

Now that you mention it I use olive oil in my black powder lube I mix up for BP cartridge. Of course it's only one part of the mix, got bee's wax and paraffin and mutton tallow as well. Of course I'm going for a stiffer mix than what you want on a front stuffer.

I'd be a little concerned about polymerization, that's what give you the non stick on cast iron, is polymerized oil(preferably flax oil). Then again it might leave a nice "season" to the bore. I do know that vegetable oil leaves a softer "season" than flax oil or boiled linseed oil does so it might not be an issue? :hmm:

I was told by one old timer that he salted his bullets for long range hunting, seems he didn't want the meat to spoil before he got to it.

I used canola oil to lube my black powder rifle when I first got it. I was trying to be diligent about staying away from petroleum products.

I didn't like the results and went back to gun oil. The rifle was slippery even after any excess oil was wiped off. Finger prints were even easier to leave on the metal surfaces.
No problems with the bore, but I would guess that during storage the oil would solidify like what I see down the side of the electric stove when I pull it out to clean. :barf:
