One of the ponds on our property had a flock of ducks in it. Since duck season was in and I had license I decided to jump shoot some with the 20 gauge Fowler. Unfortunately I didn’t have any steel shot readily available so I was looking around for something non-toxic to use. My wife was popping popcorn in the popper and bingo the light came on. I grabbed a few handfuls or popcorn kernels and loaded some in the Fowler using the Skychief method soaked heavy with olive oil. I snuck carefully up on the ducks got to about 15 paces cocked the frizen back, took aim and fired. There was a small bang and then it sounded like machine gun pop pop pop. Out of the end of the barrel popped popcorn came flying out landing in the water. The ducks flew off but circled back around and landed just out of range. So I reloaded this time using dry wads as I thought the heat off burnt powder and oil lead to the kernels popping. The ducks swam up and started eating the popcorn floating on the water. After a few mallards lined up I took aim again and went to fire again as I was squeezing the trigger I hear a voice yelling put the gun down. I lower the gun and see the game warden behind me. He then said he seen me shoot at the ducks the first time and said I did the popcorn thing on purpose and wrote me a ticket for hunting ducks over bait. Haha I swear its the truth this time, I’m not making this up.
