The only time that I unload is either on a bird or if I get drenched and then only if it looks like the pan got water in it. A cows knee and muzzle down usually prevents that.
 
Frizzen open with leather stall over it, toothpick in touch hole. Check local game laws to verify that constitutes an unloaded gun (it would in any state I’ve hunted in, but some states are getting weird these days).
I also use a bird feather, the wax on the QUILL will keep out moisture.
 
Well I unloaded it on a nice big Tom, unfortunately I missed, I think I shot over His head! Had him walk by at about 35 yards, not coming to a call, but following a hen. Walking fast so I didn’t have much time, and I held high because of the distance. He flew of quickly, what a big Tom. damn!
Nice hike, top of a hill in Southern Vermont. I will try again tomorrow.
