GREATER ST. LOUIS COUNTY
I got into muzzleloading as I needed something to do with my son on Visitation days after my divorce Someone gave me a genuine 1863 US Army Springfield and Had a .45 caliber evolved both of which I took out in the country on a piece of land adjoining Daniel Boone's Son's home where the senior Boone passed his final days.I have written about my close cll with an unintended suicide with the pistol. but the Springfield ws new country to me. I knew they were used grease of some sort and what better grease than Crisco the cooking and frying product.. WellI banged away using about 5 expensive skirted mini balls and had no idea of accuracy but became an expert on smoke. With the black powder and theCrico bunr it was an amazing experience. Visually it may have resembled Gettysburg where after the fir salvo the smoke blocked everything..
Got back to town cleaned myself up somewhat and the guns carefully. I went to my favorite bar where I found folks to provide entertainment in the folk singing style of the day. Visited for a while with another fellow at the bar who asked me if I worked at Macdonalds?
My country Crisco cloud making had given the wonderful smell of a Fry Cook.

Thanks Dutch for another "historical" story, lol. Please keep them coming. Even an old man like me enjoys stories from an old master. Just out of curiosity, do you recall what decade that would have been?

What decade WHAT would have been.
probably, If you are referring to my Crisco/Fry cook days it was in the '70's. when I suffered from Newbie's ignorance which I solved and began foisting on the public, shyly, in January of 1983.

Your little tale reminded me of a tale of my own. Bout 45 years ago I had an 1851 navy, .36 cal revolver, just had got it. Wife worked during the day, I was a night worker. I took the gun to the range and shot it using Crisco for the lube. Got home before the wife. When she came in she accused me of making popcorn without her. We made popcorn a lot. Had to convince her I'd been shooting a bp revolver and using Crisco for the lube.
Funny how someone's story can remind you of a piece of your own history. Both wife and gun are long gone.
