Something crossed my mind, there are only a handfull of builders who could get 7000 bucks for an unfinished gun... if this gun is one of those, what would it be worth if finished by a lesser skilled hand? possibly a heavy one...

Brings to mind the poem: "The Touch of the Master's Hand."

I'm one of those people who can assemble $700 worth of parts into a $500 rifle.

Just how much is an uncrowned and pitted Bill Large barrel worth after it's been crowned and had the flats re-filed and finished by Joe Schmoe? 98% done, and the patchbox isn't engraved yet (usually worth more than the parts) and the barrel isn't crowned? Hmmm.

Didn't Dixie used to sell pre-pieced hunter's star inlays for like $30?

A gun is only worth what it's worth to you, and who you're trying to sell it to. You pays your money and you take your chances.

I'm one of the ones that bid on that one.
My $25 bid was unsuccessful, but what the heck, doesn't cost me anything to bid. Right?
nvbirdman, I checked the bid list and saw yer name there. I think yours was a mighty fair bid! :crackup:Why don't 700 of us from the Forum get together and chip in $10 apiece! We could all take turns finishin' and shootin' the rifle (one of us'll have to drill out the vent first)! I must caution however that once I git my hands on it, I'm gonna drill out the rifling and make it a smoothbore! :shocking:

oooopppppps lol i though nvbirdman bid 25 dollars on the book i mentioned LOL,,,, :master:sorry I blew up :blah:
I would chip in my 10 bucks as long as we could make it a smooth bore as Musketeer says

I no longer have to think there are "nutts" in this world. This rifle on Ebay is now bid up to (1225.00) :shocking:. AND to beat that yet not finished without a lock. Not to mention its inlet for a JUNK L&R lock. They say a sucker is born everyday. :hmm: :shake: :m2c:

Zonie, anyone?....What is the seller talking about when he seez;..... "Other inlays include black lip mop, gold lip mop, Ty rainbow mop, green snail mop, as well as others".....

What is a "mop"???

I enlarged all the pictures, and I can not, for the life of me, determine what he means by this.
Just curious, more than anything else.
I have no interest, whatsoever, in the rifle, and like many others here, I think there are people who are on eBay bidding, who should not be there without parental consent.
Russ

not to mention he lists so many inlays that the thing must look like christmas cake :snore:

Ive seen many poor L&R locks and heard numerous complaints from owners of them. L&R Should be more for "Loose and Rickity". Some good ones may be out there But Chambers/Siler beat l&r hands down IMO. :m2c: I know everone makes a troublesum lock once in a while but get they're quality standards up and maybe I'll have a change of heart in a few yrs. chambers/Siler has a lifetime warranty next to L&R's 1yr warranty, if you take 3-6 months to build your rifle it'll be almost out of warranty before your 10th shot. :results:

If the barrel is from the early 80s then the lock may be also. That would put this lock into the group made while Rice (the present barrel maker)owned the company. His locks were better than the present crop.

Mother of pearl?

Yup. "Mop" = "Mother of pearl." Here's the email I got back from him:

"The winning bidder can purchase the lock from me for $0.01. MOP is short for "mother of pearl". The reserve price...bit what you feel it's worth. Thank you for your interest, and if I can be of any help, just ask or call."

:m2c:

Oh goodie. I win.

:imo: it has about as much place on a rifle as sleighbells and fuzzy dice. To each his own.

Mother of Pearl.....My Overstated Price
Going to have to let the judges take a close look at this one, it's a real "photo finish".

Now, about those sleighbells..............My 68 Ford "Fo-By" has Fuzzy dice, an 8-track, and a fox tail....where can I find sleighbells?

bidding ended at $1,300.00 without reserve met....i guess he didn't sell it   .....................bob
