People that have never engraved tend to see the pattern, and for the most part it looks pretty good. Most original American rifles had engraving that, by today's standards was really not very good, but was passable as long as you view the pattern as a whole.

Those who have learned to engrave, even just a little, tend to see the individual lines, and this can make a world of difference in how the engraving is perceived. Very little of what is being turned out today could be considered historically correct; it is too good. Fortunate for me the old stuff wasn't all that great, thus making mine passable.

That means my engraving has been HC/PC all along........ & I didn't even know it !! :rotf: :rotf:

I've never heard someone say it just like you did. I am the same way, my eye for art is good, but for me to do it myself, it never looks right. I went thru gunsmithing classes and moved on to become a machinist. I can tell good from extra-good. On a very plain gun, I like a simple engrave, but well done. On a highly embellished rifle, I like to see the type of engraving that is worthy of the rifle. Few artist can bring together, metal, wood, and carving, and engraving, into one total piece of art work.

I do admire artist, of all levels, not only in guns, but painting, carving, flowers, or anything that brings the feeling you get when you see a work of art.

"Jerry's World" of engraving and embellishment is beyond both the abilities of most engravers and also beyond the full appreciation of most LR enthusiasts.

I look at Jerry's masterpieces and wonder how any "human" can achieve such levels of "beauty", perfection and artistry. But....his "work" really doesn't fit into the realm of the great majority of "original" LRs and the engraving they display. Not to say he can't do it, just saying that evidently he chooses not to do it because of economical reasons as he explained.

Jerry's engraving and embellishments are suitable for European arms of the nth degree or...."new age" arms that will be appreciated at some future time.

Most of Jerry's work is beyond the means of the average gun owner and although his "work" is unatainable for most, it still should be admired and appreciated....Fred
