A couple years back I had a member on here engrave or recommend a engraver that did a Fleur de Lis and tvlle on a lock plate. For the life of me I cant remember who it was, does it ring a bell with someone? Thanks

I not sure if any of you folks have seen the works of Jerry Huddleston :hmm: This man is a MASTER ENGRAVER bar none :bow: . I took a look at Smitty's web page and he does fine work but I'd put my money on Jerry hands down :wink: :v.
I imagine that the engraving on a LR shouldn't be high art.....very few originals were. Jerry's engraving is possibly some of the best in this country, but if it were on one of my LRs, it would be out of place. My LRs don't warrant such fine artwork.
I use Tim Adlam of Oshkosh, Wisconsin and have to tell him to make it simpler...his BEST engraving also shouldn't be on one of my LRs.
Pictured below is a Pbox engraved by Tim.....it's a little too much , even when he was told to "tone it down".....Fred

Nice work. I'm only needing script lettering. I've email a few guys I'm thinking smitty was the one who helped me before. I'll have to wait till Monday , for some reason my iPad doesn't email have the time. Everyone have a good 4th
My comment was not meant to defend my self. It was in order to point out the fact that many people outside or the Engravers world do not realize just how good some of the top engravers in this world are. In my opinion there is no body unparalleled in the engravers world. I have won 8 very prized awards from my peers but do not consider my self to be even in the top dozen or so. The top dogs will Humble most anybody. Better look at Phil Cogan of England or Ron Smith of Dallas Texas. There are a lot more like them. Mike Dubber, Sam Welch, Lee Griffith.
There seems to be somewhat of a common link though amongst some of the top bunch. A lot of them started out building Muzzle loaders and engraving them. So never think that they can't engrave a 18th century long rifle and make it "PC". The reason you don't see most of the top engravers do stuff like American long rifles is it is too basic and doesn't pay enough money.
Why would an Engraver that get paid $50,000.00 or more to do a job stop to do a $500.00 or a $1000.00 long rifle? Once in a While I do one but just for myself. Phil Cogan of England made a percussion revolver from scratch amongst others. Ron Smith made a beautiful swivel breech long rifle and he hunted with it.

I had Smitty do some engraving for me, before I learned sorta how. Let me just say I wouldn't go back.
You never tweaked my ego. When confronted with the likes of the best in the world my ego is kept in place on a regular basis.
What I meant to say and should have is, most people on this forum really don't have any idea just how good some of the best engravers really are. So in the Engraving world there is no such thing as unparalleled. In my opinion it is the same in the gun making world. There is a level of achievement where a dozen or so reach that is far above normal. In that select few most of them are about equal. The number one spot is not only a matter of opinion but it shifts around on a regular basis from time to time. Besides from time to time some old man emerges from his garage and sweeps everybody off their feet.

In the art world there is a wide variance in perception. I am an lousy artist but I have an artists eye. Work that looks perfect to most folk will have inconsistencies stand out like a neon sign to me, this is a curse of sorts, picky, picky, picky.
Most folk just don't have the eye to see the difference between just OK and GREAT.
Years ago I introduced several people to decorative duck decoy carving. One of my students carved his ducks with pointed bills like woody woodpecker. No matter how many times I pointed this flaw out to him he just couldn't see it.
You see it all the time; from the average Joe that thinks his amateurish tat is a Rembrandt or the guy who is boasting about his cousins paintings being so great when they actually look like kindergarten work.

I once joined a woodcarving club and had one of the best carvers in the country as an instructor. I worked weeks carving a grizzly bear and was very proud of my achievment when finished......until people started asking me "what is it?"
