Just re-reading Charles Hanson's article in "Book of Buckskinning IV" on smoothebores on the frontier, and there was a photo and description of a Spanish escopeta. Hanson says these were very durable and serviceable guns, and the miquilet lock also gave good service in the Southwest. The Catalonian stock appears awkward, but must have been functional as well. Anyone have one of thse, or shoot one?

That remains a future building project.

The miquilet lock was designed to work with most any appropriate sized sparking rock that could be picked up off the ground and placed in the huge jaws of the cock. Also, some of the frizzens had replaceable serrated faces that were dovetailed in place.

At the battle of New Orleans Jackson retrieved several hundred of the Spanish escopeta muskets from storage in a warehouse and it was the primary weapon used that day by the Americans.

It was also present and used at the Alamo by both sides.

The escopeta musket has played a very prominent role in American history.

I have made several Miquelet locks and mounted them on guns
if someone would be willing to go through the proceedure of posting them I would be glad to send them to that willing person...I can't seem to get the knack of posting photos just yet...let me know...They are interesting and are made completely from scratch,,,,no kits.

Fantastic work! How long does it take you to make one of those locks?

:master:

Thanks for posting for me...It took about a month or so to make the Miquelet lock. But I did have a pattern..The first one I made in 64 and mounted it on that Arab type ryfl shown. The main spring is a bit of a challenge, Two lugs protrude into the lock plate and are pinned inside. I have pictures of the entire construction process encluding the stock...Just about everything i make is from scratch,,,Just to see if I can... :snore:

Fast reliable and smooth...no lock jar. almost any rock will do....
