I first got the Primitive fever in the 70's. Kept the CF's and hunted with them for years. I don't know if I'll ever hunt with them again. These front stuffers are a blast! That said.......I'll never give up my other firearms.Things can change fast and they might not be available in the near future.Keep the modern firearms, and buy more ML's.

Some people try to turn back their odometers.

Not me! I want people to know "why"

I look this way.

I use a recurve during the bow season and my MZ's during the gun seasons. Why can't you carry your MZ during the regular gun season, not allowed?

I have a Browning BL22 lever action .22 which I'll never sell and use regularly at the range, cheap and fun for plinking plus my daughter loves it and a Benelli Nova 20 guage pump which although I haven't used in years will never sell and plan to use it for an introduction to shotguns to my daughter next year, other than that all my other guns are traditional MZ's two caplocks and three flintlocks soon to be four.

I have enjoyed hunting with flintlocks for 30 years, but in the farm country I hunt, long shots are common. The thought of watching Mr. Big of a lifetime trot across the field at 150 yards is enough to persuade me to carry my modern rifle on opening day. I guess I enjoy both worlds.

This year I hunted with the ML's. Who knows about next year. It all depends on who's going hunting with me. In Washington we have to chose between modern, archery, muzzleloader for deer and elk. For bear you can use whatever you want. Same with the rest of the game you can go after.

I have an assortment of muzzleloaders as well as modern firearms.I like them all but I am hunting with one of the muzzleloaders, and got busted by a keen eared doe this morning when she haerd me cock my hammer...

I agree we have got to do someting to bring the Nit Wits in PA Game commission under control! we use to have a Game Commission that everone looked up to and used there pratice .But NOT ANY MORE

I made the switch from modern muzzle loaders to flinters in 2003 and haven't looked back. I had been turned off by or shotgun season for a while now and just stopped hunting during that season. Finally had a smoothbore flintlock built just to hunt that season again.

I would never think about selling my little Ruger #1 International in 7mm Mauser but it has not been carried into the woods since 1999 and at this point, I'm not sure it ever will again by me.

Paul is dead on with the practice session. I look forward to passing on my modern guns to my kids and god willing grandkids. I am going out to sit in my pop up blind "modern" but a fathers day gift and pray it my renegade goes off well. It is still raining but I am going and loving the fact I am hunting with a caplock.

Without claiming his level of expertise, I'm with Paul V. on this one.

Only thing I might add:
7. The rationale behind the original framer's inclusion of the 2nd amendment might demand something more than what a smokepole can deliver in this day and age.

I bought 'em, they're mine, I'm keeping 'em...

This was the first year I have hunted with a muzzle loader shooting a PRB. Got a six pointer. I don't believe I will go back to the shotgun (I'm in Illinois). I'm trying to figure out what will be my first ML build. I'm sure it will be something I can hunt deer with. (at least a .50)

 smart guy!! I did something like you. Only i sold the inlines and bought a lyman .54 flintlock great plains rifle. No more of that plastic stock stuff for me. If i need to take shots over 150 yards, i have my traditional .45 for that.

So what flintlock do you have in mind?

I'm thinking about a Lyman DeerStalker in .54 or the Lyman GPR in .54. I like the way the GPR looks but I am concered how the butt stock will feel after 10-20 rounds down range. The DeerStalker looks very comfortable to shoot. It's stock looks very similar to my New Englander.

I have always trusted Thompson Center so I'm also considering a T/C Hawkins in flint. It's just the small issue of 200$ difference for a new rifle. I'm not sure if the price difference between the two is worth it.

As long as you remember to PRIME THE PAN right Daniel

Is the recoil from the GPR really that bad? Im a skinny guy with nothing on my shoulder so this kind of worries me. I had a 54 cva mtn rifle and the recoil with 90-100 grains fffg goex was straight back into your shoulder and didnt hurt at all. Wish i would have known about this recoil before i bought the rifle :shocked2:

There's no need to put up with punishing recoil...it bothers most all of us and I'm 6'4"/220...when I go sight in a TC Hawken with a full power hunting load, or when I went through all the .62cal hunting load shot patterning I did in 2007, I just slipped one of those $5 rubber recoil pads on the butt...did my range work, slipped it back off and no problems, no bruising, etc...so you might consider trying one of those.

i have a 45 tc hawkins that really slams my cheek and shoulder, but my lyman in 50 cal. hardly kicks at all....go lyman.... :v :v :v

Well I'm here in TN also frustrated with the lack of mast this year, slim pickens for me. Just north of you Tellico Lake area. Don't sell guns ,I use traditional bows, front end loaders plus modern guns like all of them. But just remember one thing here in TN it hasn't been that long since we had only a few areas with enough deer to hunt ,those people buying Big Game Gun License helped to build this Herd we have today. I started Bow Hunting in 1963 about the only places to deer hunt was a few management areas, hope you have a better season than me.ps if you are into Traditional Archery I am one of Ye Olde Farts from the old Athens club.

Our mast was really devistated by the April freeze as well, my deer patterns have totally changed. My good old reliable hunting spot where there are always deer is compleatly devoid of sign right now. So as a result my year has been pretty bad. I haven't taken a deer yet but hopefully I got them figured out now. I found some really hot buck sign this past saturday so this week if everything works out I'll get to see some deer, good Lord willing.

I have shot a recurve before but wasn't really good at it. I'm going to try my hand at it. I really like the old ways, seems to me they worked just fine.

So,

Has anybody else done something drastic like this and gone all traditional? Is anybody here exclusively muzzleloader hunters, even in big gun season?

Thank you,

Jerem

heck i'v sold all my centerfire rifles i had to go all flintlock, when i finish my .54 lancaster i'm going to build a .36 fer small game and fall turkey here in pa....nope nuttin wrong wit what yer going to do :hatsoff: :v ...........bob

....

I hunt exclusively with muzzleloaders, but I keep enough modern firepower around to fight a small war. Just remember, the bad guys ain't stuffin' em down the muzzle! Keep something with plenty of ammo around for emergencies.
