I like to shoot out in the woods on my property and was wondering does anyone make a replacement ramrod to protect my wood one. Carrying a range rod is awkward out in the woods. So something that can temporarily replace the wood one on the rifle would be great. I guess I could buy more wood ones, but Fiberglass or someo other material would be awesome some.

IIRC, Delrin R's are very flexible - too floppy for my druthers (YMMV)

For about 30 years now, w/o any wear/issues, for rough hunting I've made RR's from orange fiberglass driveway markers ( $1ea @ HomeCheapo), cut to length with RR ends from Track epoxied/pinned to the ends.

There's a couple of different marker OD's, so take a thimble or the wood RR with you to check for the right diameter B 4 U buy.

When the hunt's over, the fiberglass RR stays in the traveling case & the wood RR goes on the gun for display.

Delrin sucks. It has the structural properties of a cooked spaghetti noodle. My first choice is a hickory rod, they are fantastic when made with care. If I really had do, my second choice is aluminum. Hollow aluminum tube if I can get it long enough.

There are some others I've tried that are so-so, like brass, which I would not recommend. Fiberglass and Delrin are WAY down the list. I'm not sure which one I dislike more, they are tied for last place.

Keep your loading/ cleaning strokes, short, close to the muzzle and you will have very little trouble with a good straight grained hickory loading rod.

My hickory range(and home cleaning) rod that I have used for decades is identical in diameter, finish, and brass end fitment as those fitted to my rifles. The only difference is that it’s about 8” longer to accommodate barrel length differences between my rifles, and, every few years or so I’ll give it a quick rub with oil finish. It’s still as straight, structurally sound, and pretty as it was when I originally made it. Perhaps a quirk, but with my muzzleloaders I have avoided synthetic rods for the same reason I would avoid a synthetic stock.

I have also heard fiberglass is abrasive and can damage your riflings. Nice pic! That area reminds me of Grandpa's cabin in the Uinta Mountains in Utah.

Thanks guys I’m going to just order a spare rod or 2 I’m glad to learn about not using fiberglass rods. This site always has the best knowledge to share.
