Finished Matchlock

Stained and put the first coat of finish on my matchlock project last night. It has a 42" 75 caliber smoothbore barrel. All of the other parts were made by myself, except for the screws. It was a fun project.

As someone who is totally ignorant of matchlocks (but do want to learn) please forgive the seeming ignorance of my questions. How much does it weigh? Do you have to use a support to fire it? How does it handle and feel when you bring it to your shoulder? Approximately how long does the match burn before relighting or replacing? How is the weapons accuracy? Are you planning on just target shooting with it, or do you plan on hunting(providing it is legal to do so) with it?

I'll try to answer as many of your questions as I can, but since this is my first matchlock, I can't say how long the match will burn. I've made some match from both cotton and hemp cord by soaking in potassium nitrate, but haven't tried it out yet. The forecast is for rain for the rest of the weekend :barf:, so I may not be able to try it out. It weighs about 9 pounds, so I should be able to shoot it without a rest, but maybe not for a long time. It seems to shoulder well, but I'll have to wait to see how it shoots.

I plan on using it primarily for target shooting, but may give it a try at pheasant hunting this year, but plan on waiting to use it for deer hunting until I get more practice at shooting it.

The finish will probably get darker with age and look less orange as the aquafortis reacts with the linseed oil finish. That has been my experience anyway.

As far as the burn rate of match mine burns a inch an hour using cotton cloths line rope soaked in a solution of salt peter and water.
