I would absolutely LOVE to build from a plank... however I feel I'm certainly not on that level yet. I love working with metal, do it on a daily basis with work every day. Woodworking is something I've grown up around as well. Yet, watching and helping my dad through the years build furniture, I feel I'm better with metal and almost get a little "nervous" around wood. It seems most people are the opposite and worry about metal work lol.

Before ordering parts from TOW, I always ask if the parts are in stock....I never back order parts from TOW because on some parts in the past, they were never available. Waiting for the stock is normal and this is a good thing.....a freshly cut precarve shouldn't warp or twist.
Good luck on your build.....Fred

+2 on the back order thing. I've ask them about parts that are on back order and get answers like "it will be here in about 6 months or so" I've always liked the ("or so") bit because it tells me they may NEVER get the part in. So do make sure everything is in stock before you buy it. I have actually had them tell me that it will be about a year for some parts.

Why do you want such a big caliber? A smaller caliber will still make a hole in a piece of paper and ring a gong too, and do it with a lot less powder, lead, and recoil. And, the same barrel profile in a smaller caliber will give you more weight forward, and make for a stiffer barrel.

When I shoot a rifle, I want to feel like I'm shooting a rifle. Don't care for small calibers and never liked to shoot .22s.

My favorite squirrel rifle is a .45 which doesn't really qualify as "satisfying", but at least you know you're shooting "something".

My hunting rifles all supply a sensation of "shooting" because the loads are "big loads" and also do the killing superbly......Fred

i didnt see it mentioned but zi would highly reccomend getting a good book on the subject. one I am familiar with is "gunsmith of grenville county" can be gotten from TOTW for about 50.00 but is invaluable info for the price.

what that last fellow said ... The Gunsmith of Grenville County by Peter Alexander was the first serious 'how to' book I purchase when the addiction kicked in. Wow- what an eye opener!

But, jeez ... I haven't paid that kind of money for a book since I was an undergrad ... cha ching!!

At first, it seemed a huge extravagance, but when you add up the parts you don't ruin, the time you don't waste waiting for replacement parts to arrive, and the time you don't spend in purgatory for the bad language you didn't use... well, the book's a pretty good bargain.

So, if you have not already done so, buy the book. Mine is about a decade old and, like all good tools, I'm still using it long after I've forgotten exactly what I paid...

good luck with your build, and

make good smoke!
