Anyone shoot a First model Bess.I m planning on buying one (made with parts from the RifleShoppe)and eventually using it for primitive deer hunting.I know the other models are lighter but I like the look of the First Model Bess.

I have a friend who owns and shoots a Long Land Pattern Bess and likes it, but does not hunt with it and instead prefers a Jaeger rifle. On examination, the LLP is a large, stout weapon (barrel about 46 inches on his India-made one) that packs a fair bit of punch and recoil. It is about 60-61 inches overall. A patched round ball in the caliber (.75-.77-ish bore, .735 ball) should drop a deer at short to medium range, provided you hit the mark.

I dont own a LLP bess but i do have a Bess Carbine that is very accurate out to 50 yards and has worked well on two moose i shot, those big balls have alot of knockdown power.

What's a good load for your Bess? And where are you getting your Rifle Shoppe version? Can you show us some targets? Thanks.

My Bess Carbine is .72cal. I use 90grs of 3F and a Linen patched .705 ball this load will shoot 3-4 " groups at 50 yards. The gun has custom installed sights, Front site is a turtle trade gun sight, the rear sight is a leather band with a notch in it for aiming. My gun is a Pedersoli.
