I decided to plunge into the world of flintlocks. I've contacted Jim Chambers and he has arraigned for one of his kits build for me. I've been adviced that I should get it in February, but I understand that is subject to change.
My question to you all. What should I look for to make sure it was built correctly? Of course any other advise will be welcome.
If you're curious, I ordered a Little Feller's rifle in .40 cal. Being a short feller, the description appears to fit me.

Are you getting a kit or finished rifle? Chambers only builds the kit, they don't finish rifles. I can't imagine a finished rifle being done a month from ordering!

I am getting it complete. Yes, his company doesn't build, but he is forwarding it to a guy that will build it for me. The name he gave in the email was Joe Scorsone. I research and found he is one of the instructors for his muzzleloading classes. As for the timeframe. I ordered in early Dec '15. Said there are 2 rifle in front of mine.

Well, since it is a Chambers kit that this builder is putting together for you, you can be assured that all of the parts are of the best quality. What you have to look at is the quality of the construction. First, just look at the overall appearance. Is the stock well shaped and finished? Are the metal parts well browned (or blued)? Is the finish of the metal parts good? Well polished out? All machine marks gone? Then look closely at the wood to metal fit. Is it good? No gaps? If it passes all of these tests, you very likely have a well made gun.

One comforting thought is that if Jim Chambers trusts one of his kits to be assembled by a certain builder, he will not choose a man who will do a poor job. The end result also carries Jim's name and he wants to protect that.

I may have overlooked some important thing to check but I know others will make the necessary corrections to my method of evaluating a well made rifle. :hatsoff:

You "aced it"...w/ both the Chambers "kit" and the person doing the building....Joe Scorsone is one of the best......Fred

Jim Chambers knows his kits and builders better than I do, so I could not give you any advice on what to look for other than "shipping damage". :idunno:

I think you made a good choice that should be a great rifle ,i think it would be good for some who are not so little too.

Just got the email stating it on its way. I had gotten some pictures previously, but they are small, when I try to blow them up, they get blurry, but I will take some when I get the package.

Did a double take on the dates.
But, congrats. Yes, pics are required.

here one that you won't be able to see clearly, but I can feel it. If you see the tip of the Sharpie and follow up to the stock. there is a divot that was rough. it made no sense to me, since the rest of the stock was smooth as glass.

You will see on the next pic. the box has a dent.

All in all. I love it..

It looks like it has similar parts to my Isaac Haines built from a Track of the Wolf kit. You are going to LOVE the Deluxe Siler lock. You'll get a nice long life from flints and very reliable ignition. My last trip to the range I got 25 shots in a row without a hang fire or flash in the pan. It is not too picky with priming either; 3F worked great from the horn, filled about halfway.

Good looking piece there. Enjoy!

Thanks for sharing the pics of your fine rifle. Looks like a very fine piece. I don't understand your title calling this a semi custom rifle. Seems to me that it would be truly a custom gun that Joe built. Whatever you call it...... it's a very nice lookin rifle!! Congrats. Greg. :)

Thanks for the compliment. I got a change to shoot her yesterday. no issues with her, me on the other hand...I dry balled it, twice. No harm, I had my co2 discharger.

Very fine. You should be proud. Hope you like the fit. I would love to shoulder one. I'm needing a new light rifle to stay in the shooting game but I hestiate to get one too small. My wife has a small rifle that is just too little for me.
