Hello
Is there any one who makes a double barrel flint shot gun? It would be awesome to find one of these puppies wouldn't it... now that is a true bird hunting gun... Thanks a loyalistdawg :hatsoff:

Dawg id love to find one also but financing the thing could end in a messy divorce. Might have to look into it a little harder. :rotf:

There are gunmakers out there that will make a flint double. They are extra expensive because of the extra barrel, lock and work. If you ever get down to Friendship for the Spring or Fall shoot and hang around the shotgun range, you might run into some boys that could tell you who builds them.

Many Klatch

LD Ive been told that it is possible to take the barrels from a modern gun and have them breach plugged by a gunsmith.
just what I've heard.

Recently I've been playing with a little Laugher 24 bore I picked up not so many years ago for around $1500 US. Doubt you'd get anything modern of this quality for the price. Keep looking and keep a good wad in your wallet, cash talks

I've seen at least one, maybe a couple of your double guns, Mike, and they were awesomely beautiful and made to perfection!

I have one that my friend David Dodds made for me a couple of years ago. Mine is duplicated from an original made in New York in 1810ish. David has this original,so he had it laid out in front when he made mine. The barrels were made by a fellow-I forgot his name-who lived up in Michigan or in that area. He used to advertize in Muzzle Blasts, but I haven't seen his ad in some time now. The original barrels are 20ga,full turkey choke on the left and modified choke on the right. This set is fine for turkey hunting, but way too heavy and choked for wing shooting. (20ga barrels that could be bored out to 12ga and be about right I think). I had Ed Rayle make me a set of 16ga barrels a few months ago. The left barrel is cyl bore, and the right is choked ten thousandts.I think this has been tossed around before, but if not, I like the second shot to be from the right barrel since it's easier to back the hammer on the right side than the left.

I need to start using this piece more often. It's a lot of fun to shoot. Tried .65cal round balls out of it a week or so ago just to see where these would hit at 50 yards. A little low,but I could kill a deer or hog with it for sure! The problem with owning too many firearms is that you never seem get experienced enough to reach the magic spot with any one of them! Think I'll sell my Jacob Dickert rifle and Finot fowler and settle back with just two or three different pieces......the double will surely be one of them:haha:

Hey Guys
Yea I wonder why there are no kits on the market... or are there..
my best regards a loyalistdawg

There is a fellow named Dave Price that makes an excellent swivel breech kit, but as Many Klatch said they beaucoups of bucks. I have never made one but I understand sxs are a lot of work to get both barrels to shoot to the same POA.

Regards, Dave

Hey Guys
so can we build one out of modern barrels reworked...Is there anyone who does that?
Gee want ta know...lol
My best regards Maddawg :hatsoff:

I use old damascus percussion barrels. Ed Rayle makes new barrels out of modern steel that are regulated and go for $1200 per set.

Swivel breachdouble....I have only seen the percussion rifled ones .

Does the maker have a web site??

Yeah we all want that 2nd shot.
that side by side above shure is something

Leonard Day has been making swivel breech guns for over forty years--smooth or rifed or a combination. You can call him at 413-527-0184.

THanks
But... Yea I really like the side by side look and feel... They are the clasic gun to me...The swivels are cool, but hey :rotf:
my best regards Loyalistdawg

What kind of money would a person be looking to spend for a double flinter? What is the most popular guage?

Are your kids out of college yet? If not, then you better start thinking about a caplock double, cuz them flinters is speeeeennndy.

:rotf: That is so right, That is what I am finding out. Yep this loyal subject has already got a percussion double... my best regards Loyalistdawg :hatsoff:

Depends on what quality you'll settle for and who builds it. I've seen some real cobby looking flint doubles sell for $1500 to $2000. Some of the better builders may charge as much as $20,000 to $30,000 for a nice example.
I've seen shootable original flint dbl guns in the $2500 range.
The most popular guage is 12 these days, but the big 12 bores don't look right. 20 bore is ideal.
I shoot an 18 bore original.

If you are interested in function only, not pcness, a friend has a navy arms double 12 ga. caplock that he converted to flint. I hoping to do the same thing. He has another, near new navy arms 12 ga. sxs caplock he will sell me (for $300), buy the locks (roughly $100 ea., have not priced them yet) and get the barrels rebreached (about $100 +/-, he has a guy that will do it). So for about $600, maybe slightly more, I will have a 12 ga. flint sxs double. At least that is the plan, just waiting on him to get around to selling me the gun.
