I've spent more than 40 years in a machine shop and never wore out a threaded hole yet. That's what threads are for.Easy in and out.

How often have you removed a hard vent liner from a barrel made of softer steel? This is usually the case with muzzleloaders.

If that worries you, use a bronze liner.

Let's see, shoot twice a month or so. So the liner comes out 25 times a year. Probably takes 500 times to wear out the threads. Drill out and rethread for 5/16. 500 more drill and rethread to 3/8. 500 more. If I live to be that old I won't be able to hold the gun to shoot it.

Otherwise, my grand kids can worry about it if they can even get powder by then.

I seldom remove the vent liners from my Flintlocks although it did come in handy a while back.

I was asked to show some of my guns at a retirement club meeting which was held at a city center.

The question of bringing a working gun into a public place came up and rather than go thru the hassle of dealing with the politics of the city it was an easy chore to make up some threaded plugs to replace the vent liners.

When it came time to bring my guns into the place I only had to point out that they were non-working Flintlocks and everybody was happy. :)

If it is a 1/4 x 28 thread, you can guy allen head setscrews that size. I use them with a lil teflon tape on them when I brown a barrel with a removable vent liner.

Didn't tell them about the vent liner and screwdriver in your pocket either, didja?

This whole thread was a total waste of time reading & the end result is the same as the last time this was brought up.........

Everyone cleans different.
Some like removable vents, some don't.
Some take them out some don't.
And if you don't agree with a individual, well, obviously you are Wrong ! ha ha ha ! :rotf: :rotf:

Dang, I am sure glad I learned all of this again for the 449th time........ Maybe it will sink in this time.. :hmm:

True 'nuff. True 'nuff.

I'll just add one quote from a wise gunsmith: Kit Ravenshear.

"Touch hole liners are repair items" :haha:
