Just learned that Muzzleloading Forum member "TwoShadows" passed away after a battle with cancer. Did not know him personally, however, he recommended a longrifle-maker to me, Roger Sells of Monterey, TN, who is building my southern mountain flintlock. Roger and TwoShadows shot in blackpowder events since the 1970s.

My family and I, will pray for TwoShadows' family and ther loss of a fine man.

Real sorry to hear that. Hate to hear of any of our brothers or sisters passing away. I will have his family in my thoughts and prayers.

We will all meet some where beyond that river. Sorry
to hear of the loss of one of our own.

Two Shadows and I did a heck of a gun deal last year. "Ill trade ya long with my tulle for that rifle." he said to me.I guess he did, I recieved twice the gun I traded him. The man was honest beyond reproach. He was kind as a saint to a young voyageur with no money to throw in. So I could get a gun that fit my location and ancestry. I will think of Two Shadows when I put that Fusil Fin in my canoe and start down the Allagash or the Saint John river. I regret that he won't be shooting a moose this fall with me if I get drawn for a tag. I was going to name him as my second hunter on my tag. So the best I can do now is if I do get drawn. Is to knock one down with that tulle for Two Shadows. It is said that a man is not gone as long as his name is spoken around the fire. His name will always be spoken at my fire. So until we meet again Russ, and if it is really heaven we'll finaly get that swamp donkey.

Fair winds and following seas, Two Shadows. :hatsoff:

yes fer sure My condolences to his family....he sounded so alive after the treatment that he was feeling good and was back on the forum  ............bob

P.S....i will shoot off a blank round in his memory tonight....

Cancer is so wicked...it touches all of us.

Do you think, Moose Meat, that you can shed some light into this man, his personality, what he liked, some stories like the one you posted, so that all of us may share in his spirit?

I hope TwoShadows is being gently rocked in the warmth of God's cradled arm, content in knowing no fear, only happiness and love.

I really dont know what more to say. I am not to good at these sort of things. But if I had to give you a visual of him. Picture this, The man was built like Shrek. He kinda looked like a refrigerator with a head but no neck. He was so irish his blood was green. He had the humor and the silver tongue that is so characteristic of an Irishman. He could talk your head off. It was a pleasure to have known him. I lost my grandfather to cancer in 1998. He raised me and taught me the things I needed to know. How to hunt, trap, fish, paddle a canoe, how to deal with women and how survive. He was a sailor once during WWII and one of the best woodsmen I have ever known. I would like to think him and Russell will meet in happy hunting ground. Up here in maine we have a bird called a canada Jay or locally a Gorbi. It is a black and grey bird that will follow you through the woods and hang around your camp. They will eat from your hand and steal your lunch if your not careful. Anyway my granddad told me when I was young that the bird carries the spirit of woodsman that has passed on. And they are watching over you. That is why they behave the way they do. Anyone can belive what they wish about what happens to the spirit after death. But I always make sure to give the Gorbies a handout when I encounter one. Someone may be watching over me.

Thanks for your story Moose Meat--We have the Gray Jay here in western Montana also and I assure you I will remember your story every time I see one from now on---And think of Two Shadows as well even though I did not know the man.

Eat Moose Meat -
Have you any idea what Russ' nickname "Two Shadows" meant?

I am just guessing here (for all my guesses are worth), I believe it means he cast two shadows, one in the modern world and one in the world of buckskinning...
