Sitting around the coffee bar at a heavy fabrication / machine shop I worked at in Houston in 1974 an elderly gentleman told of a flintlock pistol that came through his antique company. Wally pulled the ball that was in it and chipped out the solidified charge. He tested the powder to see if it would burn and it went poof. He was glad to have avoid injury to anyone.
After that I always figured that they're all loaded.

this is not the first time I have heard of a BP gun being charged with smokeless and patches

I have a theory that they are loaded like this to 'get even with' any would be thieves.
Interesting theory but I think you give some too much credit for ****y-trapping their ML. More likely it is plain ol' forgetfulness. You know, "I had planned to shoot it tomorrow so I didn't unload it, and then I got distracted..."

Then again, anyone stupid enough to load smokeless powder in a muzzleloader to thwart a thief will forget they did so, try to fire the gun, and thereby improve the gene pool! :rotf:

So Jukars are an actual brand of gun and you don't mean "Junkers" as in Old cheap Junkers! :rotf: Never seen one in person before.
I rather think my Muruko flint pistol is closing in on the latter description although it seems to shoot quite well. I just couldn't turn it down for 20 bucks being my first flintlock and all. MD
