Well, since so much of this muzzleloading sport is experimenting and learning...after hearing about French Amber Flints for years now, I decided to try some...(3/4" at $15/dozen).

http://www.horstguns.com./

To be honest, I've always heard them referred to as "French Amber Flints"...these were just called French Flints...don't know if that means something different or not...guess I'll find out soon enough
:hmm:

Sure Roundball, get me all excited, then I go to the site to order some genny-u-wine French Amber Flints, and they're out of stock. Now, I'll probably burn in H*ll for using English flints in my Tulle. :crackup: Oh the pain of it all, the humiliation of having them English flints fire up my French Fusil during Turkey season. :haha: Oh well I did'nt see a bird today, what with eight inches of wet snow, and 33 degrees this morning. Bill

What size flints were they out of stock on?

John is a good buddy of mine. I called him and he should have more in stock this week. I have 5 dozen ordered from him. The only guy that makes them is out of France and you have to buy in bulk. For me they seem to last a little longer. I usually get about 75 shots out of English and about 100 from the French blonde amber ones.

Good...so I take it you're confident these are the "real" french amber flints that we hear mentioned by that name from time to time...I average 40-60 from my 3/4" black english flints...be interesting to see if there's much difference in these

What's a "Teaneck" ? :hmm:

I live in a little town on the southern side of Baltimore. It's kinda like the DMZ between the Washington and Baltimore. I think John lives on the northern part of Balt. Anyway, he'll be carring a lot of other stuff, he's been selling Larry Garnder's guns on his website for a few months now.

These flints are good !

Slowpoke,

I see you live near "Hunter's Hell". Where do you go to shoot in relative peace? Desperate NYC flinters need to know!! ::

You're right !!!! I don't know how I typed in in wrong.... it should be the right one now. LOL

I shoot at a range about 20 miles from here. Our Blackpowder club has about 260 members and for the most part are a pretty good group of guys. Range fees and dues around here can run you into the thousands of dollars. Our dues are pretty cheap, $200 a year.

I would sure like to try some of those French flints, the only one I have I found in a fire pit along with the brass butt plate from a French trade gun that had been altered to look like a rifle butt plate, it was cut for a sliding wooden patchbox. I found these along the confluence of the Big Walnut Creek and Scioto River in central Ohio. It's pretty neat to know those things had been laying in that fire pit since before 1763 when the french were kicked out of the area.
The flint I found was unused and I never had the heart to try it even once, it is a very pretty translucent amber color.

Regards, Dave

John is just an e-mail away... :) that's pretty cool about the flint you found. Only thing I find in abandon firepits are soda cans and half burned trash.

Hello SimonKenton,

A little off the subject of French Flints, but I wanted to respond to your question about places to shoot within reach of NYC (Hunters Hell). I tried to send a Private Message but your number is off the hook. Anyway, there is NJ State black powder and shotgun range off I78 just west of Clinton, NJ. Public range, covered, and free. 100yd max. Just head out the Holland and keep going west until Exit 13.

Received my 3/4" french flints in the mail today...their look and shape are esentially just like 3/4" black english flints.

PRO's
When I ordered them I entered a statement in the comment field that I didn't want any "hump back" flints, only "flat top" flints and that's what I got...whether that would have happened anyway I don't know, but either they only have flat tops, or they read and responded to my write-in comment, because they were all flat tops;

They were very well packed and arrived in just a few days;

CON'S
I ordered 24 but 3 are very thick with the leading edge very blunt, chunks missing along the underside of the edge, too short and blunt to be knapped...however there were 25 flints in the bag instead of 24.

So the extra one = a net of 22...with S&H = $1.60 each...will try them soon

Slowpoke,
No wonder no one ever complains about
our club dues of $25 per year.
snake-eyes :thumbsup:

Hey SimonKenton,

Sorry for not being more specific. The range I mentioned is just past Clinton, NJ, out west along Interstate 78. From the Jersey side of the Holland it would take around 1.5hrs drive.
