I agree with SS. I spent over 30 years hunting trouble, that was my job. Now I stay out of troubles way when possible. No way would I risk my wife, prized weapon, much less myself by going to Mexico. But that's just me, I've had all the trouble I need for several lifetimes.

There are MANY reasons Mexico remains a Third World Country.

I would not go there for any reason.

I know there are many who think no more of going there than they would of going to another state in the US.

But they can go without me.

Whst's to stop a person from stamping their own serial number on the barrel if it doesn't already have one?

Moot point for me, however.
I will never go to Mexico for any reason.

My wife is from the next town up the road, River of Ponds. you`ve picked an excellent moose hunting area. many of my friends and two of my brothers-in -law are hunting guides working for the outfitters in the area up there. our paths may cross during the season, since that is the same approximate area I will be going, simply because I know the area. if you get a chance try, the salmon fishing as well

Have to agree with several others here knowing many friends recently traveling to Mexico. Forget about taking firearms/ammo to Mexico. Not worth the trouble, money, or risk. Find some good ol' USA turkeys to hunt. Just my $0.02

for every rifle I have built, I stamp my name and number of the rifle on the bottom of the barrel.

I have taken my rifles across into Canada, makes it easier to have a serial number and make of rifle.

If you are not familiar with Mexico, do heed some of the warnings. I used to go to Mexico quite a bit for work. Not anymore, too much risk. I would get weekly security briefings on Mexico and there were plenty of things to be concerned with. I dont even go to the tourist areas anymore with my wife.

Take a look at the following, might help https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/alertswarnings/mexico-travel-warning.html

How long did it take that US Marine that accidentally took a gun into mexico to get out? WITH CONGRESSIONAL assistance :shake: . Know yer congressman well?

Not trying to sway ya (well kinda) but do ALL yer home work before ya go. Sad situation down there and I believe the wall will be built before we hear from ya again if something goes wrong :(

yep, i'm taking my fly rods along. we are hunting with Brophy and Sons Outfitters. booked for the week of Sept 18 thru 23. taking my Cristians Springs .62 cal I finished last fall. from what i'am told the border isn't a problem with the gun or blackpowder.

excellent. my brothers-in-law work for Patey & sons. I`ve heard good things about Brophy as well, they might even be related by marriage. the flint gun will be no problem , neither should the BP. here it is regulated by the ministry of natural resources as it is classified as an explosive that can be used in mining. I`m not sure of the logic....
just have all your paperwork and ducks in a row for the border guys and there will be no problem. flintlocks and certain certified papered antiques do not require a licence and are not considered a firearm in Canada, but ... once again, the logic....

Not Osceola turkey, Oscillated, only found in Yukatan Peninsula . I plan to chase Osceola too but my wife wants me to go after the exotic one.
Seems like a lot of trouble just to kill an "exotic" (rare?) bird. But then, I never understood the trophy hunter (killing for fun) mentality. :shake:

When we were in Venezula fishing for Peacock bass, the camp was raided by the bandidos the following week after we left. The U.S. fisherman had all their cash, passports and IDs taken. Slowed our wandering down.

When we were ready to leave the remote camp, we had to hire an additional plane to get us out of the jungle, they said we had to much luggage, cash money was required, $100.00 per person.

When we were ready to leave the remote jungle jet airport I was told no carry on baggage, another $50 gone.

I ate supper with 2 fellows who were world travelers while fishing for baby tarpon.
They carried fanny packs all the time, they had their passports, billfolds, cash and vehicle keys at the airport in the U.S.

Have a good trip, world trip is no longer safe to remote areas.

You are very lucky to have such a wonderful wife.

However, there is no possible way I would ever travel to Mexico, ever. I speak Spanish too. It is just too corrupt and lawless. Poverty and desperation are the rule. They hate Americans. You could be abducted for ransom and probably will have money extorted. I could never enjoy being there, I could not relax, and I'd be forever on guard for criminals.

IF you are determined to go, do exactly what the resort and guide tell you to do. Never strike out on your own. Fly in and meet your hosts at the airport. Travel with them to the resort. Do not try to drive there in your vehicle.

Alaska is awesome... just an alternative idea.

In my view, our government is totally screwed up, yet even our government advises against travel to Mexico. Might be a point in there somewhere.

It wouldn't hurt to get a letter from a Mexican agency to carry with you stating that what articles you are bringing are ok with the steps you are taking to import them as well. Get it in both English & Spanish. Beware of relying on official publications with phrases like, "in general, it is ok to......" to keep you legal.
