And when they find "contraband" in your car? What then?

They impound the car and keep it for several years. They will give it to thier "cousin" who will drive the wheels off it. When you finally get it back it will be totaled. It happened to a good friend's '64 mustang.

In the meantime, they will extort money from you. After some time in a Mexican jail, they might allow you to leave with the clothes on your back. Gringos are just sheep to be sheared.

And, that is the police. If you value your life or property stay out of Mexico.

Not really worth the trouble to go kill a turkey.
With the relations between the countries and with something exotic like that, you have written "target" on your back in capital letters. Mexico is a Third World country with third world problems.
In addition, with all this cartel stuff going on the last place to go is a rural secluded area in Mexico. Who knows who operates there besides some turkeys?

I am sorry to add to the negative side, but I agree with SmoothShooter as well. My brother has lived down there since '91. The country has become very dangerous. He does not go out at night anymore, if he can help it. He said years ago, in most places, it was safe. Today, it is very dangerous to venture off the beaten path in Mexico.

Well I'm still In the planning process. Definitely wont go if things are really bad.

I guess we will see where the world is at that time, just trying to get things figured out.

My wonderful wife wants to take me to Mexico to hunt Occilated turkeys!! My preference would be to use my flintlock but getting black powder may be an issue. Does anyone have first hand knowledge hunting with black powder in Mexico?
Thanks for any info!!

If you are hunting without a guide, Southern B.C. Canada has a lot of turkeys, no problem bringing your ML or Black Powder with you, and no worries about personal security. Might make a pretty good option.

Aside from that, if you hunt with an outfitter that knows what he is doing hunting in Mexico will be no more dangerous than anywhere else in the world. Fly in, meet guide, do hunt, fly out.

South Africa has WAY worse crime and personal safety issues than Mexico yet thousands of hunters go there every year with no problems.

Very few places in the world are as safe as Canada. If I let that stop me from hunting other areas I wouldn't even go to Texas let alone Hungary, S.A and others like it. My advice is to go and have a good time. Your odds of being bothered, unless you are in the drug business, are REALLY low.

I hate to say it but you guys have been listening to far too much of your government's propoganda. They have made a very lucrative business out of convincing the U.S. populace that the whole world is out to get you. The number of laws that have been passed in the U.S. in the last ten years to "Protect America" that violate the freedoms so many of you fought so hard for, is mind boggling.

Even Canada has been targeted as as source of Terrorist threat, even though there is not one documented case of a terrorist incident where the perp entered through Canada. I have talked to dozens of Americans who are afraid to travel to Canada because they believe there are Muslim terrorists just waiting to lay hands on them.

There are definitely places in the world that are too dangerous to make travelling there a good idea, but it is a relatively small percentage of the world. Puerto Rico, the Philippines and the Dominican Republic are all far more dangerous places to travel than Canada but you see tens of thousands of Americans going there because they don't know any better.

You can do as you like, but I am going to keep travelling and hunting and I can pretty much guarantee I will get back home fine every time.
