I recently found a T/C Seneca .36, unfired, in the box, a beautiful gun. I hadn't seen one since the late '70's I'm guessing, and never shot one. I'd like some input on them, who has one? who likes them? I haven't decided what to do with this one, shoot it or keep it unfired.

I just traded for one in excellent condition and shot it today for the first time. I was a bit underwhelmed initially but I admit that the weather's bad, my glasses were fogging up and I only shot two loads and 7 shots total. I'm curious what sort of responses you'll get. I'm in the final stages of completing a .36 SMR build so honestly, I don't really need the Seneca but I've heard such good things about them that I took a shot.

I put a GM .40 32" on mine and am very pleased. Not so pleased with the factory barrel.

Good for small game and in my home state is legal for deer :( They are bringing a premium now days,I've got one that doesn't say SENECA on it..it is really pretty accurate but doesn't make much noise or smoke :rotf: Since I have a 40 cal flinter have given some thought to selling it ...we'll see....since it is NIB it will bring a good bit of $$$ if ya want to sell it

I just traded for a Seneca .36. Came with a few balls so I've only shot it once to sight it in with 45 grs. 3F, .350 ball, .010 patch. Benched at 25 yds.
it puts them all in the same hole,I was impressed.
I was thinking I'd sell it but now I think I'll keep it. I have another in .45, barrel was bad so I rebarreled it with a GM .45 barrel, it shoots great. I hardly ever shoot a capper but if they shoot good I'll keep them around.

Bottom hole is after site adjustment.

My wife's rifle, which I am now shooting, is a Seneca that was fitted with a Douglas XX barrel and target sights many years ago. The Seneca is sized for a smaller person. It was, and remains, a reliable and nice factory made rifle. They are in demand. If you can buy one, do so even if it is only to flip and make a little profit on.

I also have one in .36 which I like, but it also is my first and only bp rifle!

It is a bit small for me ... As I'm 6'1" ... It would be good for a smaller of stature person ... Thrifty on powder, I use 30 gr KIK 3f

I hear a lot of people talking about drop-in barrels for these but I've done some looking and can't seem to find them. Are there any supply outlets that sell them today?

I think they and the cherokees are the best rifles for youth and smaller women. Not for heavy loads but great paper shooters. :idunno: :idunno:

Ours was not a 'drop in'. We bought a breech from TC and had it installed on the Douglas barrel.

I bought one for my nephew a few years ago. It's a tack driver with the .36 Maxi Balls and Fffg. He seemed to outgrow it in a few months and I'm thinking about trading him a .54 for it. He's a college boy now so may be too smart to go for the deal. I hope not

I had Cain's Outdoor in West Virginia install the breech and attach the sights and under rib. Not much cash outlay, quick service.

Good thinking, maybe I'll look into getting a breech for it and a raw barrel and doing it myself. I have the .36 but wouldn't mind adding a .45.

I think they quit making the drop in Hawken .36,
too many folks got hernias toting them around. I had one, weighted a ton. Couldn't wait to get rid of it.

The TC Seneca in 36 caliber is a fun gun to shoot. Mine likes 40 grains of 3F with a .350 ball. Mine came with a 45 caliber barrel which I later traded for the 36 barrel. Don't know if this is true of all TC Seneca 36 caliber rifles, but mine has deep groves for round balls. My 32 Cherokee has shallow groves? Anyone else want to jump in here regarding grove depth?
