craftsmen:
i thank you for your wisdom and knowledge in the gun building art.

i have a tc renegade .54. what i want to do is buy a 36" gm barrel from track along with the appropriate bp 1" and in .58 cal.

it looks doable, what about sights? how do i install them and how do i fix the barrel to the stock?
thanks in advance.

i was just adding up the cost from their site. looks like a job. might try and find a drop in barrel.

First thing I'd do is pick up either Chuck Dixon's Book or Peter Alexanders Book on Longrifle construction. I know your not building a rifle but the books discuss installing a breech plug, cutting dovetails for under lugs and sights.

Your barrel is held on by one or two slotted under lugs through which a key passes. This key is what holds the stock to the barrel. You need to order a under lug(s) of approriate size along with your barrel.

Sights are fitted into dove tails cut into the barrel. If you are going to install a T/C style adjustable rear sight I'd suggest you take the barrel to a gunsmith and have him drill and tap the barrel for the rear sight. Unless you have experience using a drill press, and tapping bind holes.

The other possibility is to have Track install the plug, cut the dovetails for the under lug(s) and sights. You may have to send them your stock so they can get the proper spacing for the under lug(s).

I've got the drop-in in .54. The slow twist with those extra 4"(32"barrel) is a huge plus, after break in that barrel is a tack driver!

Hanging 36"'s off a renegade frame is a strech man! That barrel will be WAY out there. But that may be the only way to get your 58, I understand those are getting hard to find nowadays, a few members here are already searching.

Tracks smith, William, won't need your stock, he already has all the measurements to make any proper size barrel a drop-in for T/C. And your right, buy the time ya add, breeching, underlug, rail and sites slots your handing track a bunch.

You could just have it breeched and the rail holes drilled and tapped,,then later on cut the dove tails and install the rail

I was doing the same research this spring, I wanted to build a 58 or a 62 barrel for my Renegade. After looking at all of the options out there and not finding what I wanted I called TC. They transferred me to their custom shop, Fox Ridge Outfitters. $190 and a month later I had a brand new 58 cal Renegade Barrel, complete with sights, ramrod and a tang. . . . It does have the QLA muzzle and shallow 1:48" rifling but so far it has been very accurate with a patch and ball. I am pleased with it.
If this is to be a hunting rifle as mine is you may want to give Fox Ridge a call. . .http://www.foxridgeoutfitters.com/

thanks for the info guys. 36" might be/is to long i think. i have been on fox ridge site, but they changed it from what it used to be.
1/48" twist is ok.
is it possible to get a .62 cal barrel from fox ridge? interesting.

Just a little bit of my experiences with GM lately.

I cannot make any comments about their quality as I have never owned one of their barrels (despite great efforts to do so)

I need a new barrel for a renegade that I have. I wanted to buy a drop in barrel made by GM based on all the good press they get on this forum. All of their dealers were out back in June/July when I started looking so I called GM direct and asked why. They said they had a huge military contract and that had pushed all their other production back. The contract had been completed and they were in production on black powder barrels and it would be about 4 weeks for the .40 cal slow twist I wanted. I called back a couple weeks later to check progress and the person I talked to didn't know what I was talking about. Another week and the deadline was pushed back to a month out but I was assured they just needed to have breech plugs installed and blueing and they would be ready in 6 weeks.

This went on for 3 months. I emailed and asked to have a specific date when they woul be ready OR just to be told "We don't know when". Their reply was less than definite. They said they MIGHT have them done by such and such date blah blah blah.
I told them I would buy somewhere else.

Now, As I said, They may make a wonderful product and IF I could find one I might buy it... IF

If you can find what you need from GM in stock it might be a great deal but from MY personal experience if they don't have it in stock, just pretend they don't make it because they may never do so and you could end up waiting years.

If you gotta have a set timetable, buy from someone that will stand by a delivery date.

That is my 2 cents. Hope it is usefull to you.

Ben
