....and if it hasn't been said already....(or even if it has)....

MAKE SURE YOU ARE CLAMPING THE BREECH OF THE BARREL IN THE VISE FORWARD OF THE THREADED PORTION!!!

If you clamp the barrel where the vise is putting and compression on the breech threads it may be impossible or get the breech plug out or to get it seat going in.

Enjoy, J.D.

Good point JD and Sam make sure your vise and bench are sturdy. The vise needs to be bolted down to a sturdy bench.

JD mentioned in a earlier thread someone who turned there whole bench and vise setup over when working on a breech.

OR, if you find yourself saying....."Hey, what made that crackin' noise?!?!" :shocked2: ....check it out before your work bench breaks or pulls off the wall.

:shake: J.D.

Ok I got the breech plug in, a friend had a much better vice then I. I do realize that I have plenty to do before I get to the lock and honestly I think I have been in a hurry with it. I'm fixin to slow down and take my time.

I do have the inletting done, breech plug installed, tang bent and drilled into the trigger and then as I was tapping the 3/4" channel for the trigger, at the last 1/8" my tap snapped off in it. So I'm going to try to knotch out the side of that channel a 1/4" and pull out the broken tip of the tap and then finnish tapping or just buy a new $9 trigger if my knocking idea doesn't work perfectly.

Birddog6, I did not intend to jump ahead of you, I am very appreciative for the help you have givin me and I hope I did not offend you.

Without seeing it it's hard to say what the best method of removing the broken tap is but the first thing I would look at would be trying to get the trigger plate to move out of the bottom of the stock.

Whether this can be done depends on a lot of things like the angle of the tap and how much of the forward edge of the trigger plate the trigger guard will cover.

If the foot of the trigger guard will cover the entire front edge of the trigger plate, removing a little wood to allow the plate to move forward and downward might do the trick.

When looking at this option keep in mind that whatever you do must be covered by the foot of the trigger guard.

Another option would depend on where the front or nose of the tap is.
It might be sticking thru the bottom of the trigger plate. If it is, grabbing the nose with a pair of needle nose pliers should allow you to unscrew it a ways. Once the tap starts to move it will free up and be very easy to unscrew the rest of the way.

When I built my first "advanced kit" from Pecatonica River I said to myself, "This is a damn expensive bunch of parts. If I go as fast as I really want to I'm going to end up with a pile of expensive junk.
If I take my time and think each step thru maybe it will turn out OK."

With that in mind I went very slowly with every step and everything turned out great.

Now you lost me... Why are you threading the trigger "channel"? What sort of trigger setup are you using?

I put things together pretty much like Birddog. Makes life much easier.
