Hello the camp!

Retired and just purchased a home in Grand Junction. Looking to move back this Sept. Lived there in the Oil Shale days - any black powder clubs in Grand Junction, Montrose area? Thanks, The Strawstalker

No NMLRA Charter clubs listed for western Colorado. Contact Howard Sylvester, State Coordinator, at Canon City. 719-275-5323. He might be able to help you further.

The Colorado State Muzzleloading Association site lists a host of clubs, but all are on the Eastern slope of the Rockies. Grand Junction is on the Western Slope, many hours drive from these clubs.

There are often local groups who just are not organized into a specific ML gun club, but shoot at local ranges, and often have one day a month where they have priority use of the range facility. Others meet and shoot at private homes, and ranches.

A check with local gun stores, and even the police agencies will often turn up information on where a local group of shooters meet.

My brother and a friend just began a new BP gun club near Tallahassee, Florida, by advertising a shoot on a specific weekend each month after getting board approval from their local rifle and pistol club. Apparently, a club for BP shooters had existed at that club for years, but fell apart some years before my brother moved to Tallahassee. They have been slowly building interest in MLers, and putting signs up in local gun stores, all to get notice out to potential shooters.

Sometimes, you have to start your own club, when you move to a new place. " If you build it, they will come."

I spend a few months in the vicinity every year, but I haven't had much luck locating supplies, much less other shooters. Doesn't mean they aren't there, rather it's more likely I just didn't try hard enough.

The only bit of supplies and guns I found was at Sportsmans Warehouse out at Mesa Mall, and no one there seemed to know the difference between a shooting patch and a cleaning patch.

I heard several references to a traditional store run out of someone's garage out on the east side of town, but could never track down any specifics.

Whatever you learn in your digging, be sure to post it here. I'm usually pretty busy when I'm down that way, but I'll sure hook up when I can.

Here's a link to the Colorado State Muzzle loaders association officers and directors page. I don't have a copy of the official publication handy but if you look at the link below, call the editor of the Poke and Stroke , Doreen Webb and ask her to look up any of the local clubs in GJ. Also, go over to the Hunting forum of this site and look up Greenmountainboy he is Gunnison and knows the west slope area pretty good.

When the weather is good CoyoteJoe and I go over and whoop on the boys at CO springs muzzleloaders association.
Thats a fair piece from you, there is also a group shooting every month in Paonia CO thats closer.
We have a Rondy the first weekend of Aug just north of Crested Butte with a very competive shoot.PT me if you want a flyer.

I left Grand Junction when I was 19. Went back to bury Grandma. Haven't been back since. I left at the beginning of the oil shale thing and don't remember any really great things except the hunting. Just seeing the name brings back memories. You will enjoy the area. :yakyak:
