Graver - Homemade vs. Store bought

I my gravers are store bought. However in the books and videos they are homemade. The big dif. is the store bought are thin and dinky vs. the homemade which look like you could grave a battleship. Last week I was messing around and managed to break a square graver half in two. hmm I say's, what a crappy graver!

Would I be better off just making my own? Looks to me like the prof. guys make their own.

all my gravers are hand made. i use momax steel and cobalt
i even make the ones i use in the gravermiester. for
hand chasing the thicker the graver the better. the
store bought ones are to thin and flex to much, which is
lost energy.as for bent linegravers i buy them, hard to
make these. and they last a life time..i also make the
handles long and thin with a ferel(brass or steel).
the push graver handels are just to short, and wern't
made for hammer chasing. :m2c:

hey, lsu tiger. you can buy the steel blanks in square
stock or round and shape to your likeing. 90% of my
work is done with the square edge engraver. i make many
sizes from bold to shadeing line thin, i also like a
face angle of 52 deg. with back bevels. the whole tool
when done is about 7 to 8 inchs in length. and most start
by using 1/4 inch stock and ground to shape ( keep tool
cool with water) it takes time. ::

Thanks. That sounds like the "die sinker's" chisels sold by Brownell's (?) I've thought about that. Who are you getting your's from??? :RO: :redthumb:
