You do very nice work!

I don’t own a Great Plains Rifle, but a lot of people on this forum love them. They can be hard to find right now.

An alternative, if you can’t find a Lyman, might be one of the Mountain Rifle kits from White Muzzleloading. I don’t know how to post a link from the iPhone, but if you Google “white Muzzleloading” you should find it. The proprietor, Gary “Doc” White, found a quantity of un-used Austin & Halleck Mountain rifle parts, mostly .50 caliber barrels and mountings, and he has put together parts sets, kits, and finished rifles using these parts with new lock, tangs, and stocks. The A&H Mountain Rifles were nice guns, with very good barrels. Might be worth a look.

Doc puts his contact information on his website. I’ve never met him, but I have read a lot of his articles and he comes across as being a very knowledgeable but down-to-earth fellow. You could probably call him to discuss the project you have in mind, and maybe he could fix you up. It won’t hurt to ask.

I would like to see photos of your project rifle when you finish. I bet it’ll be a beauty!

The Investarms Gemmer from Muzzle-Loaders is the same gun as the old Lyman GPR.

Not trying to "Hijack" a thread here but since we are talking about the Lyman plains rifle, I got a question. If one of these rifles goes bang when it is supposed to and the triggers aren't terrible is it a justifiable expense to go with one of those L&R lock replacements? Just to jaz it up a bit?

I never replaced the percussion lock but I did replace the flintlock lock. Replaced the trigger with a Davis too.

Thanks notchy Bob for the information. I will do that, Im really looking forward to building one.

They are out there, I mentioned this in an different thread, I found an Investarms LH 54 perc gun 1/60 twist. Had to bring the front sight down a lil bit but at 75 yds I am very pleased. What seemed to work best was 90 grs 2F Goex, PRB, 0.018 pillow ticking patch. Need to play with it more to be sure. The wood is not near as nice as they were back in the 80s/90s but its better than a Hunter I had.

Nice photos and information. My Lyman GPR is Lefty, also...took several inches off the barrel; you've got nice grouping there. Best of luck .

I'm considering that. Did you weigh before and after? How much did you remove?
Oh, gosh, I don't think I weighed it, but removed about maybe 8 inches. My gunsmith does a nice job on such things, and I've had him shorten maybe 3 or 4 modern shotgun barrels. Just older ones. He did "the job" on my Tenn. mtn. flint, a LH Dixie Miroko mtn. flint, and an older Uberti Hawken-type. You can tell I'm really into shorter guns! When deciding where to cut, you have to look at overall appearance and balance, also where do the bbl. bands, stock, etc. all enter into the picture.

That's a lot. You went to a 24" barrel. How does it shoot?
Haven't shot it yet! I'm into so many things that I don't get out to shoot as much as I'd like. But I'm always happy to see guys posting about their GPR;s and reporting shooting results and photos. Thanks! (I'm average height but they should call me 'shorty'!) Best of luck

He does have them. Price is high for a GPR at $685.

I can remember when I bought a new one for $430.
Well i had second thoughts and went ahead and ordered it. I may restock this one and put a beautiful piece of wood on it. Thank you MtnMan I appreciate you help.
