I have a 60 inch long rifle. In NY you have have your weapon in a locked case and lock your vehicle if you run into the convenience store. Does anyone know of gun cases that will accommodate a 60 inch rifle?

Truthfully not sure about muzzleloaders. Right now you don't have to get a background check for muzzleloader. Big changes coming in September, where you have to get a background check to buy ammo. Not sure of all the September changes.
I didn't mind background checks to buy a gun, I mean, not a big deal, but the ammo thing is a pain. Going to stock up on rimfire ammo so I don't have to go through a background check every time you buy a box of 22 ammo.

Can the muzzle stick out? I am not being funny, just thought that the cheapest route would be to find a used plastic hard case and cut a hole/slot in the end for the barrel to stick through. Would still lock up and secure the gun. I personally have not seen a hard case long enough for a long rifle. But I have one with a slot cut in the end as that is how I received it with most of a Bess inside!

Boomstick, did find a long soft case as a result of your post, thank you. Did not find a long enough hard case from Plano. Going to research the vehicle storage laws today and decide what route to go. Worst comes to worst, I'm pretty handy wood worker, I could always make one. I built a boat, could build a case.

Please read the DEC rules under Transportaion of firearms, nowhere does it state that one must have weapon in case. It state ALL must be unloaded. Cross bows unchoked, no bolts. Common sense would be to LOCK vehicle doors.

How does the law enacted in 2022 impact transporting guns in a vehicle?

Effective September 1, 2022, if you leave your gun unattended in a vehicle, it must be unloaded and locked in a fire, impact, and tamper resistant storage depository that is hidden from view. Glove compartments and glove boxes are not appropriate safe storage depositories. A plastic or aluminum, lockable, hard-sided, gun case or safe will suffice for this purpose.
If an adult remains with the vehicle to ensure security, a case or safe is not required. To prevent theft and ensure safety, it is always recommended that firearms be secured during transport. Local rules for traveling with firearms also apply and may be more restrictive. For example, New York City requires that all guns be unloaded, in a case, and out of sight, even when you are with the vehicle (Penal Law § 265.45).

I made this basic functional case for about $120. If you can built boats, I'm sure you could do better. I made it for auto travel. Plywood would probably be better for any commercial travel.

I mentioned crazy crow, but here's the link: Kentucky Rifle Hard Case - 72" long

I don't have one, and from discussions on the forums those that do have one either love it or had a bad experience when travelling with one.

Cool boat. Is that a kit (I've seen similar from Chesapeake) or a scratch build?

ED C, sweet case. Is that a pedersoli Sharps. I have the Billy Dixon model.

Your very helpful Boomstick. Yes I went on crazy crow but didn't see cases.

BoomStick, Thanks for the link to the case, will check it out. The boat is a rough cut Tatmen Kit right from the banks of the McKemzie river.

I have one of these and a couple of rifles I Have are worth it, when you are protecting thousands of dollars the price of a good case is cheap insurance.

I also have a couple of their tarred canvas cases for everyday use.

Truthfully all told I probably have to many cases probably 25-30 or so, after a lifetime you accumulate things.

Please read the booklet, 2023, that one gets when buying your license, it plainly states one does not have to case weapons, please READ, Summary of current hunting regulations. :doh:New York City is another case has nothing to do with what you asked. As a NYSDEC Hunting Instructor, that is what we teach. also, one can carry concealed if permitted to carry, yes not in some lower NY counties and NY City or any other weapon unless one has proper pemits
