In California guns in vehicle must be all of these:
1 unloaded
2 in a locked case or locked compartment (e.g. a locked trunk)
3 not have any ammo in the same case or compartment

Unless you have a concealed carry firearms permit. Then you can conceal the gun on your person (wear the gun under your clothes).

This is not as tough as the New York law because in California the case just has to be lockable, not necessarily fire, tamper, or impact proof.
Just lockable.
