I would like to know if anyone on the forum can tell me where to find info on how to build one of those fine rifle cases you see. The one I am wanting to make are the ones that have the partitions in them for a bullet mould, other tools, felt lined and generally the kind that would be called fitted cases.

I want to try my hand at building one for one of my rifles soon and sure would appreciate any info on where to look for instructions on how to.

The case would not be a presentation sort of case with a glass on top but a wood case with handles that would be used to transport/store your rifle in. :hmm:

Appreciate any help

Thanks WRussell

The photos will help in my getting one built I believe. I am pretty handy with wood and have a friend in the leather bus so one of these days soon I am going to try my hand at building one.

Appreciate your help

Many years ago, I worked in a small woodshop, and made cases to carry heavy, but portable, construction tools. With Wood, weigh is always an issue, but we used 1/2 pine boards( way too heavy for a gun case!). The outer surface was covered in a sythetic material that was glued on, and then we used metal corners, long plated metal angle " iron " to protect the edges which we riveted on to the box, etc. The boxes were heavy as is. So was the equipment that was going to be transported to the construction sites, day and night. Apparently site security was too poor to leave anything on site at night, so everything was packed up and put in trucks, or secured trailers.

If you are gong to used wood, you will want to use thin wood for the tops, sides, and bottom. However, you also will need strength. That is where gluing and screwing ribs into the top and bottom gives the added strength. So, building a gun box of wood is a little like building a wooden canoe. Many builders today will use a simple venire instead of buying and using expensive hardwoods for the entire case. The venire is glued onto some base wood, after all the internal work is done, so that any screw holes can be covered by the venire, too. Use styrofoam to block the interior for the gun you design the case to carry, along with providing spaces for tools, and extras, and then cover the styrofoam with satin or velvet cloth, glued into place. Felt was used in the old days, and can also make an attractive case, if you like carrying around a pool table. The only drawback to using felt is the lint it picks up, and sheds over its working life.

Hola Amigo how have you been?

Appreciate the info on the case making/ I am wanting to stay away from the styrophome if I can and want to make a light solid wooden case like in days of old.

Your absolutely right though about needing to keep it light. Needs to be a rifle case and not a trunk!

Take care and thanks
