Guys I just ordered a new TVM Early Lancaster rifle. I want to also buy a nice gun case for the rifle. I do not know the overall length yet, but I am going to call and get that.

I am looking for a nice gun case for the rifle. I also thought something that is period correct might be a good idea. Or I was also thinking about a soft leather or suede fringed case.

What suggestions do you guys have for cases?? Any particular makers?? Any pictures of what you might have?? Or what you would suggest?? Any and all ideas welcome.

You guys helped me alot on how I ordered my new TVM. I am hoping you guys can come through for me again on a gun case for my new rifle. Thanks for your ideas.

Gotta get her ready for ground hog season!! Tom.

I'm no history maven, but I've seen period illustrations of some like this one. I don't own one, but handled one belonging to a friend. I liked it enough that I'm going to make one of my own from some commercial tanned elk I have laying around.

I"ve made two from heavy suede and they look and work well . Just a word of cation be careful with commercial tanned leather as it might contain acids used in the tanning process , not good to leave your gun for extended periods in the case . :v

Brownie;
Have you got a pattern? I tried to make one out of elk and didn't realize that it had to have the "hump" that TOW shows.
Wool blankets also make nice scabbards. :hatsoff:

At $43.95 for the track case it's hard to go wrong. Materials will cost more than that. OTOH, sometimes the fun of doing it yourself is worth the extra.!

Here ya go, Hogghead, this one's made of wool.
Got it on ebay about 6 years ago.

I don't have a pattern, but with their pic and my experience making my own patterns, I don't see a problem.

As for chemicals from chrome tanned, I'm not really worried about it. In our climate you simply can't leave any gun in a case for long, or it condenses moisture from the air and holds it against the metal. A sure prescription for disaster with any material!

I'll only use cases for short term protection of guns hitching a ride in my truck.

here's one pattern - designed for using a blanket but will work for leather with some minor adjustments.

That one from TOTW is IMO too patch worked and the extra hump is not really necessary when built right - you just have to make it with enough room for the hammer and guard.

here's a post a circa 1890's one with lots of beadwork, but the basic style goes back at least to the 1830's.

I have the one that TOW sells. It's very well made and strong.

I recommend it.

The rawhide tie is weak, but it's easy to replace.

Me too! The TOTW cases are grand!

In fact, now that I have seen the bead work they do on them I may have to set my wife to beading it!

Hey Tom here's one my wife made for me out of rattlesnake fabric. She just laid the gun on top of the fabric, folded it over, added some padding and sewed it up. Also made a matching possibles bag.

I just bought this one from tommymaker. He makes his own stuff and sells on Gunbroker, auction arms, etc. The pictures don't do it justice, very nice work.

Thanks for the pictures guys. I like the looks of some of those wool cases. I do not think I could make one myself(not very handy). I will keep my eye open in the classifieds for one. I am sure with some of the craftsman here that
I will find a good one. I just need to get the finished length of my new rifle.

I bought a couple of leather possibles bag's from a member here who made them specifically for me. And I was very very very happy with the way they turned out. This is a very enjoyable forum, no quibbling. Thanks, Tom.

Well, I done did it. I've long used these canvas cases for transporting guns with barrels up to 42". It occurred to me that the hammer has never been an issue, so I decided to make one out of that chrome tanned elk leather I mentioned earlier.

I used the canvas case as a pattern and cut it out, then cut a length of fringe like the others illustrated in this thread. Pretty basic, but workable. I'll post pics back to this thread as soon as it's finished, probably in the next couple of days.

No pics yet, but I finished the "knock off" of the canvas case using elk leather, adding a fringe while I was at it. It works great, but I'm going to make another with a slight change in dimensions (a little narrower at the barrel end and wider at the butt). One thing I didn't plan on but makes sense in retrospect: The hammer on a flinter wants to grab the soft leather, making it a little slow to withdraw. Wider like I plan might help, but I may have found a good reason to put a harder leather "liner" in the butt end for flinters.

My time is bought and sold tomorrow, but I'll try to get pics and post dimensions Sunday if anyone wants.
