Guys and Girls,

There is a nice looking but expensive original 1817 Harpers Ferry flintlock on the block at GunBroker.

Not mine but it would look nice net to my 1842.

Be wary of any antique firearm where the marks are worn and fuzzy and the rest of the firearm is not . Also the screw heads are hardly marked , neither is the frizzen . Pan isn't pitted .

It's been extensively cleaned/polished and traces of pitting can still be seen. If I were looking for one (I'm not) I would rather it hadn't undergone all that. I expect it was very nice before to have come out that well after. Caveat Emptor

From GB description, ‘Metal has been cleaned at some point and has a nice even bright gray appearance’. Yes it does. I wonder how much value and history was erased with Scotch Brite or whatever someone used? Guessing the bead blaster was down at the time, so a little of the value and history is left. Surprised they didn’t attack the stock more to match it up with the bright and shiny metal. Would have been nice to see before the polish and wax job.

Well, you skeptics were all wrong. It was way too expensive on Gun Broker at almost $5,000. I watched it for several weeks with no action. Then I just happened on the same musket at J&J Military Antiques for about $3,500. I bought it and it just arrived yesterday. It's a beauty and I can't wait to fire it. Maybe I was just lucky.
