Would you consider Red Beans & Rice as a variation on Ham & Bean soup? It fits - sort of...

A Sazon flavoring packet (Culantro and Achiote) - Does that count?

Lots of garlic, onion and good smoky sausage.

I kinda figured a bullion of some kind, never used the Goya stuff....Always Knorr. I'm curious though....

I don't like sausage in red beans and rice.... turns it into something different....

Ingredients
Monosodium Glutamate, Salt, Dehydrated Garlic, Cumin, Yellow 5, Tricalcium Phosphate (Anti-Caking Agent), Coriander, Annatto (Color), Red 40.

I think I could make that... :hmm:

For the price (less than $2) of a box that contains multiple seasoning packets, it's easier to add the packet.

I add a package (or two) to a batch of red beans (29oz can of kidney beans, onion, garlic and sausage) or Posole - adjust to taste. Large batches may require more.

red beans and rice, and you use canned kidney beans instead of frioles rojas? Talk about sacrilege.

To me it matters little whether the beans are black, pink or red, but the small beans taste a little different. When I cook them, I have time to soak over night and do the old fashioned way in the slow cooker. I add a table spoon of fajita seasoning. onion, etc.

I usually look at a seasoning packet that my wife has chosen, and look at the ingredients list..., then I go and get the same spices without the extra chemicals, and whatever dishes she or I make, are better AND cost less.

I have to figure that a spice company puts its best product in stand-alone containers, it's "mixes" are probably the stuff that wouldn't otherwise pass muster.

Reading about all these variations in bean soups and their ingredients really whets the appetite and tells me that my simple bean soup, although it tastes good, could be expanded to include some other ingredients. Thanks to all the bean soup connoisseurs for this info and I'm not being facetious.....it's a compliment......Fred

Unfortunately, the spices in the stand-alone containers at the grocery store are usually old and somewhat past their prime - not enough turn-over to keep them fresh. Also, the majority of the price is for the container and the fancy name on the label. I find spices less expensive and of far better quality when I buy them at our local Health Foods store - and no 1000% markup for the container with a fancy label....

I made bean soup a few weeks ago, and found the left overs in the freezer.

Mrs. reminded me about a ham and bean soup made by some friends of ours. I dislike it immensely. It is diced ham and fresh green lima beans in a soup, a little onion for flavor.
