Well, I'm getting reacquainted and rather fond of my T/C .58 Big Boar that I bought in '92 and never really used until recently. Have learned to use reasonable loads and PRBs for good accuracy and even got a new GM .32 barrel for it.

If you remember this rifle, you'll recall that it has a rubber butt pad, presumable for the ouch factor when loading up to 120gr.

I've really grown to hate that butt pad - the T/C only roughly resembles period plains rifles to begin with. I like to get rid of it, but am wondering how to do that without messing up the length of pull, short of restocking.

Am I out of luck?

Thanks

The rubber butt pad could be replaced with something decorative, either with a single or multiple layers of wood, metal, etc... in an artistic and stylish way, like by using a series of thin contrasting spacers to make a pattern, or by using an inlay or such.

Hmm, like trying to retrofit a curved steel T/C buttplate and maybe trying a backfill of laminations of thin contrasting wood as you suggest.

You could make a cover from deerskin or rawhide so it looks like a repair or part of a sling attachment. It should be sewn on directly so it will a snug fit. You can make it as fancy as you like, add some bead or quill work to spiff it up or keep it plain. It will hide the butt without making any real difference in the pull length. It could slow down your shouldering the gun as the leather will create a slight drag if you slide your gun's butt into your shoulder. The one thing is if you don't like it, you can always cut the cover off without a huge loss. Good luck.

Well doggone, David - that's a great idea:

Hmmm. Pull the rubber pad, attach new curve-contoured wood "spacer" & steel butt plate, then cover with bead-decorated suede...

Found no curbed T/C buttplates on fleaBay; wonder if T/C will sell me one...

I think Track Of The Wolf has brass cast schuetzen style buttplates. I bought one from a shop and it looks just like their's. It's pretty heavy, has top and lower projections that end in flattened circles (for styling however you want) and the front is cast flat with about a 1 1/2" - 2" top extension. Pretty fair sized with plenty to whittle/grind down, so it would fit your stock. You could leave it hooked-style or pare it down to a T/C configuration, only the face would still be flat. Of course, that would help you mounting it. Anyway, do a search there.

Well, thankee, Red; the L.O.P. this seems to be 13.5" (13" without the BP), so if TOWs is thick enough...hmmm...well, I usually end up calling Track about once a week anyhow.

ps - see that you're in ole N. Virginny sames me! Glad to meet ya!

Red, TOW's #BP-JAEG-4-I looks like it'll be the only one that's large enough to be fitted, since that doggone Big Boar buttstock is FAT: 1 & 9/16".

Subtler curve to the butt than I remember, too, but with some judicious heating and bending, she oughta work.

Thanks again

WT why dont you see if you can get a hawkin stock for the 1 inch barrel of one of the auction sites.talk to round ball he has got some in the past he mite be abble to tell you where to look.
bernie

Thanks, Bernie - Been looking at fleaBay, AA, & G'Broker for a while. T/C stock with a channel for a 1-incher is hard to find. Plus I'm cheap.

Pulled the pad off & took a few measurements; got to thinking about locating a little slab of mild steel and shaping one up. Might be worth a try, especially if I can hook it over to toe so it looks a bit better.

There is a steel buttplate from a Renegade listed on Ebay...check out #330075186307 or run a search for "New Englander". Maybe it will work on your rifle.

Thanks, Moe. The Big Boar had a fatter stock than any other T/C 'traditional' type, and the plates from others in the series are a little too thin.

of course, I could always thin-down the wood & re-finish...

If you trim down that stock to accept a Renegade butt plate you'll learn the beauty of the english sporting rifles. :surrender: Send me yore old one, I've got just the place for it. :v

Try looking at an internet site called levergunleather.com.....I ordered a butt cover from him for my custom 1950's model flintlock. It even has a cutout on one side for my patchbox, which was no easy task. I believe you could leave your "ugly" butt pad on the gun and just cover it up. That way you don't change the length oof pull. These are custom made and one of a kind. Take a look at his website. I think you'l be impressed.

My Pad,

Doggone, but that's a pretty piece of work there.

Hearing from you fellas 'bout all these good alternatives for separating the cat from her hide proves just how much imagination I lack

Lever is a real nice guy to deal with. I sent him photos of my rifle as well as a drawing with dimensions. The patchbox was a little tricky. He forgot to put the scroll work on the side of the butt cover on my first one so he sent a second one at no charge! I think I paid about $50 for it. Worth every penny!

Mike, I was just looking again at Lever's lace-ons.

The LOP with the pad on was 13.5" and 13" without. I tried mouting and looking down the sights while the pad was off and was surprised at how well my lousy old eyes picked up the tang-mounted aperture and how comfortable it felt, even with only a half-inch difference.

Now I'm thinking that a lace-on with the brass grommets on the off side and fringe on the bottom would look right. If the butt covering leather itself was 1/8" thick, then the length of pull would be ideal. The old pad would just be left off.

I like those covers he made with the leading edge scalloped around the cheekrest. The BB doesn't have a cheekrest, of course, but I still like the look.

Hmm. Might make up a sketch & send it out to Lever...see what he thinks -

Thanks again for your thoughts and link!
