I just got back from the range today. I shot my TC Hawken without a hitch. I've been shooting that rifle for well over thirty years and it fits me like a glove. It has never smacked me. That's just me... I really enjoy shooting that rifle.

I have never been accused of being the sharpest knife it the drawer, but if your at the range shooting targets, why not back off the powder a little.....120gr??? :shocked2:

Cuzz is does!!!!!

You are probably right!

However all the complaints are not what the mechanics indicate they should. :hmm: I guess this is just another of the several million things I will never understand! :idunno: Plus I am running out of life to try and whittle that list down!
If you look at shotgunners, of today, with all the vast experience gained over years of making custom stocks and shotguns, none will have stocks that drop like folks here claim are great. I doubt no one here has seen a, price is unlimited, shotgun with a stock profile of an early flintlock. I know I'm going out on a curly maple limb saying that but.............

When we asked various owners of the Thompson Hawken what they would like to see on a custom stock, two statements were frequent. First, they would like to see more drop in the stock. Ours has "more than the factory equipped model".

They didn't ask me. Maybe I am not “various” enough? :shocked2:

In reading about the fitting of shotguns and high power rifles, I understand your better stocks have a slight taper down in the comb from the butt pad forward. This causes the stock to drop down away from your face as the recoil shoves it back, instead of smacking your cheek. I am not sure I explained that very well, but it has been a long day.

Comparing shotguns and rifles is apples and oranges. Completely different shooting styles.

Like I said before, some guys fit the T/C stocks and some don't.

I had a Traditions Hawken that was the most painful gun I ever shot. Accurate as all get-out but I couldn't stand to shoot more than 3 or 4 shots because it hurt! To see the sights I had to really hunker down in the stock and my cheekbone would take a good hit in a spot about the size of a dime.
The T/C stocks fit me a little bit better but not much.
I can shoot my GPR all day using a hunting load. No pain at all. The GPR stock just fits me better.

I believe there are more than one factor to consider when it comes to fit. How high/wide your cheekbones are, your eye spacing, neck length, shoulder width, reach, etc.

No sense arguing which is the better design. Just shoot the style that fits you best.

Well said, that's it in a nutshell.
The T/C Hawken beats me up.
The Renegade is an all day shooter.
The CVA Mountain Rifle is fine.
And the GPR just plain feels funny too even shoulder,, :idunno: It just don't fit.

I have a renegade and a hawken, the hawken feels better to me. I was shooting the renegade with a 370 tc maxi-ball and it kicked me 3 times with one shot!!!!!!! It hit my shoulder, my neck, and then my face. I shot the same load in the hawken and no problems. the load I was using was 80gr pyro rs with 370gr maxi-ball. I just shoot good ol PRB's out of both now unless I am leting one of my budies shoot

I played with the heavy conicals and big powder charges for a while because the hunting shows told that was what it took. I shot a couple of deer and then decided I didn't need quite that much power for a whitetail that weighs 120 pounds field dressed! I got rid of the TC Hawken, built a .50 Lancaster, switched to round balls and reduced my powder charge quite a bit. Since then, my life has been much more pleasant!
