Helk replacing a site

I have an 1860 uberti army .44. Lost the front site which is a friction fit, site taped in a shallow grove in the barrel.I cut a piece of brass to fit. Any sugestions on how to put the site on? Does JB weld work ok, How bout soldering it. Thank you kindly for you help. Teton Ted

I lost the front sight of an 1860 army a few years ago. The original was staked in place, I trued up the slot by tapping a chisel into it tthen made a new sight from a piece of pewter scrap. I pressed it into the slot and then used an old wood chisel as a staking tool to secure it. It's stayed in place for several years and quite a few rounds since then.

I just replaced the front sight in both my Remington New Armys. I tried JB Weld but the sights popped out after a dozen shots. So I soft soldered the new sight in and this time it seems to want to stay after about 100 rounds.

I used a brass rod for my front sight and drilled a hole part way into the barrel. I used used acid core solder and solder flux and a propane torch to set the sight in. After I was done I sanded down the excess lead and then reblued the end of the barrel.

You could probably do as well with a penny that has been shaped to fit the slot.

I have soldered front sights with a torch and acid core solder. I make them tight to the slot and then rough up the part below the barrel surface. Geo. T.

And be sure if you are replacing the sight anyway to make it high enough to hit POA. Whole lot easier to file it down than build it up.
