All,

I am about to start my Woodsrunner kit and never in my entire life have ever done anything like this.

I got the pre-carved example and it is beautiful. But the side plate and lock are both plain… I feel they won’t look right and I DESPERATELY want to do some kind of light engraving/decoration.

The problem is, I have no idea what to do. Maybe just do a notched/stamped border for the sideplate? Like with a punch or something?

Then the lock plate… I’m thinking a couple little curly Q’s would look nice. But how is a novice like me to do such?

Should I send these to some member here to have the decoration added? Or just bite the bullet and try it?

Thanks all!!

Smokey

Just don't bite the bullet on any of the parts that came with the kit. Get yourself some brass bar stock from your local hardware store and the proper tools from someplace like Woodcrafters and then practice on that throw-away brass until you're good at it. Best of luck to you.

You can go back and engrave those parts at any time. If you are interested in learning how to engrave the best thing you could do is find someone who can show you how and then practice on scraps. A good book that will explain the process is Engraving Historical Firearms by John Schippers. John is a master engraver, I used to love to watch him engrave screw heads.
