hey every body i'm about 50% into a project....does everyone know the T/C hawken patch box....well my project i'm going for right now is taking the patch box door off of the main body of it....and i have this piece of white wood that about 2.25" wide 3/4" thick and 20" long....not sure if it's maple or popular....it's heavy and tight grained....so far i'm done with enlarging the patch box hole in the stock to match with the enlarged hole of the patch box plate minus the door....and next i need to cut out the pattern in the white wood a little larger then the hole i'm putting it into....then when the wood is in the stock and i get them sanded down to match each....the end product is the dark walnut stock with the brass patch box and the white wood in the hole where the door is suposed to be....then in the white wood i'll have my k carved into the middle of it cause it's my first letter of my last name....and has anyone seen this type of inlay before....i clicked on the poll icon at the start of this post but not sure if that's all i gotsa do....waiting for all of your wisdom to come my way to enrich my life with ::......................bob

I can help you on the wood:

Unstained poplar wood will have greenish streaks in it as seen below, you might say it's a poplar choise... :haha: :haha: :haha:

I crack me up... ahem.

i'm also thinking about changing the shape of the patch box opening so it is a little more rounded....also this is a pic of that wood....

so musketman does this look like anything you might know of....it is hard and dense i'm pretty sure it's not white oak....

The green tint makes me think it's poplar, but I'll check some other types and get back to you on it...

That sure looks like popular or some call it white aspen to me. We have a lot of it in Northern Wisconsin. We also call it gopher wood. Because if you burn it in the wood stove you throw in a chunk and go-fer some more. ::

It is a nice tight grained wood, but make sure you put a good sealer on it if it is going to spend anytime outside or where it might be damp.

It will take a stain nice, and actually is a strong wood. I have used it to make book shelves and gun racks out of.

Wal, jus don go a puttin no unpopular wood in thar!! At's what ole Zonie says!
Har,har, har, hee, hee, hee :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha: :haha:
