As I thought in the 80's I will buy my caps, got 10-15K now for when needed. I only use them for pistols now rest is flint.

i'm thinking 'bout building a flint lock these days, who has the bewst kit out there for the $$$

are you using FFG or FFFg

FFFg Schuetzen powder. The decanted hairspray applied with eye dropper secures things very well. One drop per cap works great.

Just remembered I used it on my paper cartridges that may have caused the delay due to the paper layer. Will experiment next time with loose loading with 2 paper caps and some with 3 caps on paper cartridges.

I didn't have much luck with the Duco, the compound tended to fall out, regardless. I probably just need to store the caps more carefully, with some cushioning of some kind.

I read that the primer holders for unmentionables are good to hold caps. I haven't tried that yet. I also saved the cap tins to carefully add the home made caps. I am going to start out with the primer holders and see how that works. Good Luck!

i've been using a 35mm film canister and place a wad of paper towel on the bottom of the canisterthen toss in the home made #11's then place a nother wad over them , this works well for me when hiking thru the woods

I like that ..I'm sure you forgot to tell us those primers packs then go into zip lock bags for long term storage or extended forays into the field ..good idea !

I been making caps for a about 6 months.

The easiest method is to forgot matching batches. Just mix all the primal bags in a plastic container.

Then make a cap holder out of a piece of an 4mm acrylic sheet. This should place the empty caps at just below or at the surface level of the acrylic sheet.

Dust the the sheet with primal and then use a fine bristled brush to spread the primal into all the caps. Brush excess back into container. Now take a match stick and compress the priming compound.

Move acrylic holder to a new dry clean area. Move caps to new location. Brush any remaining priming compound back into container.

Now using a spray bottle mist the caps generously with denatured alcohol. Let dry for 24 hours. Then spray with a cheap hair spray, again being generous. These last two steps set the compound and seal the compound into the caps.

A little bit overcharged. However, I have yet to have a hang fire using caps with this method.

BatBoy I see you like to live dangerously mixing it all up at once. Trust me you don't want it to go off like that. When I was still mixing with dry powder ,I made a scoop out of a toy ring cap cup. glued it to a matchstick and cut it down to about half size. this would give me 16 to 18 charges from a single batch of the prim-all powders. Unless you have a binder in the alcohol ( like shellac) it will not do anything.You don't need it Pressing the powder dry is good and you can use a lot of pressure if you want. I used to press with about 40 lbs. The hairspray will work.I used to use it too. Now I use other binders. I shoot in rifle matches with pyrodex and haven't had a failure to fire in the last two years. Good luck and stay safe

When I was doing this the slow way I super glued an empty cap to a match stick and used that as a scoop.

I believe there is a binder in the 22lrreliader primal compound.

The risk is minimal and I usually load 1,500 to 1,800 caps at a time.

Yes there is a binder. It's in the small bag and is off white color. I had thought it is dextrin and someone here said it is gelatine. In either case its completely ineffective. As anybody who has gone by the instructions can testify to. Crumbling and falling out before you even get to the range.Just use the hairspray and leave out the little white bag. It is inert filler and reduces power. One bit of safety advice. Do not crush out any chlorate clumps once you have mixed in the other powders. That's when it becomes dangerous.

You mileage may vary.

I have not had the crumbling you have mentioned. Not to any degree that I have noticed. The hair spray is probably the step that is negating major crumbling.

Using all 4 powders together with a drop of alcohol to smooth them out and tamp down with a match stick works great for me

Just a note: you can save fired musket caps, hand-squeeze them to shape and use the mixture to refill them. I don’t know how you’d make the metal cap, but refilling is easy so save those fired factory caps. With two-layer soda can caps made from the punch, you can put it on a musket nipple and slowly and carefully stretch it to fit. One it fits decent, fill it per instructions. These aren’t perfect and take more time but if you need some musket caps, these work!

It occurs to me that there's something at least a bit incongruous about making your own caps while talking about a deer in the crosshair when you hunt. Perhaps just a manner of speaking?

If I remember correctly, beverage cans have some sort of lining on the inside. Could that be responsible for the occasional adhesion issue?

i been using pie tins, beer cans where too thin and would get damaged when punching.. also i had to burnish the stamping tool with a dry lubricant inside friction surfaces, I've been using tungsten disulphide powder, but molydisulphide might also work

golden sky A easy to us lube for your aluminum, Get a can of JPW .The cast bullet guys sometimes use it for bullet lube. I put it on the pop cans .It's cheap non sticky you only put it on the outside surface that becomes the cap cup. I have used it forever in making gas checks.
